In making this film, I learned a lot about incarceration.

I came in blind.

I didn't come in necessarily wanting to dive into the particulars of it.

I came because I was attracted to making sense of something complicated.

What also drew me in was wanting to try to attempt to tell this kind of criminal justice story from a more tender place, which, you know, it's not really often seen.

Create something creative and tender and explorative and deep about a subject that I think makes a lot of people uncomfortable.

And so really understanding how jails and prisons are actually really distinctive and who run them, I think, is incredibly eye opening and once you have an understanding of what's going on you can then figure out how to regulate it, how to dismantle it, how to change it.

I think for people who are unfamiliar and want to get involved with the issue of regulating jail spaces, which I think is the main goal for this film, which is a national issue.

I would say get involved with any community organizers that are focused on that specifically.

Those advocates tend to have direct lines to your local electeds and city council and to your mayor and attaching yourselves to those organizations can help you give that kind of guidance and supply the kind of necessary attention that is needed on these electeds to hold them accountable to regulating these jail spaces.
