How to Build a Library is important for this moment because I think it really shows what happens after the statues fall.

It invites the audience in to reflect on history, on access, on memory, on reclaiming spaces.

The film about it for us is a real, kind of, attempt to show how vital those human-to-human relationships are, how important our relationships are with physical objects and physical spaces.

The archive in the library had only ever held one version of Kenya's 20th century, and it was a colonial one.

African writing, African voices, African stories had almost entirely been missing from the shelves.

We really saw this as hopefully a blueprint for other similar projects all around the world.

It became a story about reclaiming a narrative, a love letter to our city, Nairobi, to the two women, to the librarians and the users and anyone, anywhere who has ever looked at something broken and has decided to build it into something better.
