La Crosse’s George Poage, the first Black Olympic medalist, lived a hidden life.

The 1896 trial of Oscar Wilde revealed the deep-seated homophobia of the era. It was also the time George Poage came of age. The scholar athlete was the first African American member of the UW track team, and the first to win an Olympic medal. His story was largely forgotten until researched by a UW-La Crosse historian who also made discoveries revealing Poage’s hidden sexual identity.
