In 2006, the paper mill on the Flambeau River in Park Falls went bankrupt. Northern Wisconsin timber executive William "Butch" Johnson bought the mill and reopened it as Flambeau River Papers, hoping energy efficiency would help him succeed where the previous owners had failed.
