Iowa.
Public Television Sports brings you a wrestling classic, the intrastate rivalry, the Iowa State cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Two schools whose famous wrestling coaches are dueling here for the last time, Dr. Harold Nichols of ISU and Dan Gable of Iowa.
Good evening, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown.
And with me is Chuck Patton, who had two team titles up at the University of Northern Iowa and is 18 years there.
And tonight, we're here to see these two great teams in our last college meet of the season.
It has been a lot of fun, I have to tell you.
I really enjoyed that.
And we hope you people enjoy it, too.
We're going to have the opportunity for you to write in.
There's going to be an address that Doug will give you later in the show in this new prime time that we're trying.
We hope that that's been something that you enjoyed.
We're going to get a chance to do the state tournament next week, too.
You bet.
We'll be back in Veteran's Auditorium for 6:30 next Saturday Night Live, the Iowa State Championships.
And here we are in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Chuck, you know, I know the Iowa fans are gonna have a hard time with my saying this, but I think you and I really know that if it hadn't been for the Herald Nichols era at Iowa State, there might not be a Dan Gable era here at Iowa.
That's true.
There was only really one place for Dan Gable to go when he got out of high school.
If he wanted to stay in the state, he was going to have to go to Iowa State because Iowa, you and I and you and I just weren't doing it then.
And he went to Iowa State.
And the successes are there.
The rest is history.
That's right.
Now the old warrior is going to have his last duel meet right here tonight.
Well, he has 20 wins this year.
Now, that's something no team from Iowa State's ever achieved.
Besides that, I think, is the maybe the most important thing that we can say for Nick.
He feels that the successes of his athletes going on, graduating from college, being producers in society is a prime factor.
Now, that's not just talk as I mean, I've heard you say that about your own teams.
It's very important to all of us.
Yeah, you bet.
And it's important to Dan Gable, too.
He's been one of Harold Nichols greatest pupils.
Dan Gable's credit stand for themselves and speak very loudly.
I think important to him now is the fact that in all those national championships that he's won, it's been since 1979, that they've had a perfect season tonight.
They can cap this this year.
And then.
Has a chance maybe to go on and win eight national championships in a row, which no team in wrestling history has ever achieved.
While we're talking about coaches, a little reminder to an intermission tonight, we're going to have a chance to speak in exclusive interviews with two people very intimately involved in picking the new Iowa State coach, Max Janek, who is the athletic director.
And Less Anderson is a prospective coach.
He's the assistant at Iowa State.
Also off the mat will meet Keith Mahlum and Mark Johnson, who are the two assistants in Iowa Now let's talk about wrestling, man.
And we see some wrestlers.
Last Saturday night, we saw Iowa beat Oklahoma State.
I don't think I was ready for that.
I think if we go by last week, they're ready for Team USA.
Doug, They were just very impressive.
That was one of the most impressive performances I've ever seen the team put on.
They were just great from top to bottom.
And here's three of the reasons why.
And of course, we're going to see all ranked wrestlers, right?
They're number one in the country.
And Mary Davis, for the last time here in front of the Hawk fan.
And you know how Berry gets fired up for those big ones, those big nights.
They also have in this Iowa lineup, two men ranked second.
Well, these guys, I think, deserve that, too.
We haven't seen Kesler very much.
He was hurt in January, but he's a senior his last time in front of the home folks.
And then Heffernan, of course, is looking at a chance to have a rematch with Larry Jackson from Iowa State.
And that's a loss that occurred last time when they met.
So there should be some fireworks there.
When Iowa State also has its NCAA lineup just about ready to go.
I think we're going to see it tonight and they're hoping to get back in the top five.
Seems funny to say that doesn't last.
Now, the top five, they have a number one ranked wrestler for the first time this year.
Joe Gibbons is at the top of the ladder.
Joe has been trying to get there all year and of course, he's beaten some very good people in order to be ranked number one.
It's one of the toughest weight classes.
But tonight, he's going to have his hands full.
This dresser from Iowa always gives him fits.
So we'll see a good match there.
That'll be a good one.
A lot of good wins tonight.

Jack Mahoney was a student at the University of Iowa, competing in swimming, basketball and football.
He returns today as a Hawkeye who made it big.
Jack moved to Hollywood in the early 1940s and became one of the most popular stuntmen of all times.
He doubled for such stars as Errol Flynn, Gregory Peck, Gene Autry and the Durango Kid.
He went on to be the Range Rider, Yancy Derringer, and played in two Tarzan movies.
Let's welcome back Dan Gable, special guest this evening.
Jack Mahoney, part of the crowd here in Scarborough all firing up, saying hello, John, Tony, He's a lot better.
Dan Gable I don't know.
I think that's a problem, gentlemen.
That's right.
Up next, in an upcoming episode of the Fall Guy to be here with the Hawkeyes today.
So a special salute to Jack Mahoney.
Ladies and gentlemen.
At this time, we'd like to have Dr. Harold Nichols join our coach, Dan Gable at center.
Matt, please.
At this time, I'd like your attention for a very special presentation.
Tonight's meet marks the last time Iowa State wrestling coach Dr. Harold Nichols will visit Iowa City as the cyclone coach.
Through the years, his teams have fought many battles in wrestling arenas around the country, winning most of them, we might add.
There have also been many memorable dual meets between the cyclones and Hawkeyes.
After 37 years as a head wrestling coach, Harold Nichols is coaching in his 600th and last dual meet this evening.
Here are some of the accomplishments of this great wrestling coach who was already a member of Wrestling's Hall of Fame.
He began coaching in 1949 at Arkansas State.
He joined the Iowa State staff in 1954 and has held that same position for 32 straight years.
His cyclone teams have won six NCAA championships.
They have been NCAA runners up 11 times, third place finishers seven times and fourth place finishers twice.
The cyclones have won seven big eight championships under Coach Nichols.
Last year's seventh place NCAA finish was only the second time since 1958 that his Iowa State teams have been outside the top four in the national tournament.
He has a career coaching record of 493, 92 and 14 for a winning percentage of 835.
A native of Cresco, Iowa, Nick has coached 37 NCAA champions.
His wrestlers have won 89 Big eight championships.
Seven of his wrestlers have participated in the Olympic Games.
For the United States.
It's only fitting that Dr. Harold Nichols, in his dual made career against a coach who was probably his most gifted and without question, most celebrated wrestler Dan Gable.
To us, to us here in Iowa, Nick will always be the coach who coached the coach.
Dan Gable will now present his coach with a special plaque and an eye blanket from the Hawkeyes and the entire Iowa Athletic department following tonight's meet and the upcoming NCAA championships.
We want to wish Dr. Harold Nichols and his lovely wife, Ruth, all the luck and happiness in the world.
How about a nice hand for the winningest coach in collegiate wrestling history after Harold Nichols and a standing ovation at Carter Hall firing?
Well deserved that by.
And we all understand that Dr. Harold Nichols, the winningest coach when it was time for him to hear what's happening now is very clear.
It's just everybody in Hawkeye Arena, Hawkeye fans and Chicago fans alike on their feet applauding Harold Nichols.
And it's the second time, too, when he's won.
His name was mentioned at the beginning.
There he was, Harold Nichols.
He just received the award from Dan Gable, the coach in Iowa, his most famous pupil, in honor of his reaching the end of his wonderful career, 37 years at Iowa State.
That brought a lot of wet eyes.
Yeah, yeah.
All the way around here to see a couple of the boys on Iowa State team on their finger to their eye.
And I think that is a tribute to the man.
Now, these are the Iowa seniors out on the mat now being welcome.
I think I see Kevin Brown out there.
We had three other seniors who are wrestling with that very good, Steve Wilber.
And let me just go out there to those of the seniors wrestling their last meet at home for Iowa.
Well, a lot.
Of emotion here.
And now we're ready to wrestle and we're going to go at 118.
Bill Kelly for Iowa State in the red against Matt Egeland of Iowa in the black.
Now, they did not meet in the first match because Kelly was not wrestling at that time.
He was not down at 118, certainly.
No, He's been sitting around in that team, 126 kind of waiting.
And now in the last three or four weeks, he's been down 218 and has shown very well.
And I think the next time the rankings come out, he's going to be ranked up there in the top five.
You bet.
He's 17 and four.
He's been tough.
With those four losses.
All came at 126.
So this young man is really a threat in that national picture.
At 118.
There's Matt Hagelin.
He was off.
He was not in the arena.
I think with all the awards.
He wasn't quite sure he was going to be ready to go.
He was outside, warming up elsewhere.
Kelly's been ready for a while.
Hagelin last week wrestled against Oklahoma State's number one ranked Mark Perry and gave him a terrific match.
Yes, he did.
And he was in that match at the end.
You know, it's one of those ones where he didn't start out very fast and then came on fast.
And I think it gave him some confidence.
We'll see if it carries over.
And the team took a lot of fire from that.
Here we go.
118, Egeland in the black with his.
Back to you now on the left against Kelly of Iowa State.
This is one Iowa State he expects to get and hopes to get it.
I think they are planning on winning this match.
And it'll be interesting to see, as we mentioned earlier, if they go on, we'll get a start.
You know, last time they came on strong near the end of the match, but he didn't start it very fast.
He tends to want to get close enough to his man to touch, but he tends not to get real aggressive early.
And it's like he has to be down a point or two before he starts to wrestle hard.
He's made a couple of reaches from his lock up position, but we've had no cigar yet and Kelly has not made an offensive move.
There's the first samurai move.
A lot of wrestlers do this, Doug.
They they tend to get out and feel the other man's pressure.
They kind of drop to their knees and swing at the other man or reach in with their arm.
But they don't really penetrate on him.
They don't really put the man in a position where they control the tire.
And by that I mean what they're doing right here.
And he just about got snap down out of that.
Kelly from Iowa State, almost.
Got snap down, but he's off the mark.
First three minute period.
First period, as you know, is 3 minutes long and the second and third are two apiece.
This one is one minute old Kelly is carrying that two on one tie up here.
Well, this is what I said.
You get in these positions, these are called tie ups when they're in the open position like that, you know, the no man is in position to control.
But once somebody touches his opponent.
Basically loss of control, know there's a deep penetrate high crotch by Edwards, but he can't get his arm across to get to the double.
What he's got to do now is improve it and get up with it.
Keep it.
In close to his jacket, Harold Kelly collared it and.
Kelly scored two to nothing now in favor of the Iowa State wrestler.
They took that five foot Hagelin head in close to his chest and pulled it out away from it.
And once you lose the thigh and try to hang on to it, it extends you out away and then you get taken down just as you did.
We were talking before the meet started at the end.
Just the difference we see in Bill Kelly this year from last year, trying to tip get a tilt for our cheek to as we hear people say he hasn't got it yet in the way he appears this year from last.
He seems so much more comfortable at £118.
He went about getting down there in a different way and it just made a difference in almost his whole personality.
Well, we see that he acts like he actually is enjoying wrestling this year as compared to last year when he was just a little sour on things.
And it didn't pan out for him.
When he didn't get into an NCAA in place, he.
Could do very well this year.
This is Egeland of Iowa, who could also do very well if he certainly if he wrestled as well as he did last week against Perry.
Well, he wants to get out of this position.
And keep his arm for now.
You not like Kelly, tried to snap that arm down and he just left arm that's got away from him, got his escape.
2 to 1 now in favor of Bill Kelly of Iowa State in the red.
We have about a half a minute to go in the first period of the first match, Iowa.
And I would point out that two on one very nice snap that egg cutter.
Just took his legs back out of there.
Kelly had the two on one and he pulled the arm down, took his legs out, snapped him down.
The scores take that.
Well, we saw that almost happen in the first minute.
And now Egeland is up 3 to 2 with just 11 seconds left.
There's Dan Gable to smile.
You can see that he's encouraging his athlete to go after the arm, pull the hips in tight and try to get a hip tilt on Kelly, See if he can do that one, get set, set.
Now, he.
Has the referee.
Mike, excellent.
Has a microphone, as you know, stand in close standing, nice little legs.
But that's why Kelly couldn't escape that because he kept the.
Thighs in close.
To his chest.
That was very important.
He saved the point because there were only 10 seconds to go.
He just Kelly's driving in it.
Hagelin just pulls his legs back, snaps the arms down, spins it behind for the two point takedown.
23 seconds of riding time advantage for Kelly.
Kelly had the choice and took down.
We saw Eklund try to get that arm last time and pull it in close.
This time he misses it, just lets him come to his feet.
It's three three after that stand up escape by Kelly.
Each man has a takedown, so we haven't settled any superiority here yet.
When they get in this position, this is where they both tried to go last time.
Now, Eklund got in like this on a high cross last night, Now is extended.
Could see how his arms are out, away from his side, His head is down on the mat and he's pulled out away from his face.
He wants to either hang on to this and get a stalemate, which he just did, or try to improve it.
Carver Hockey Arena Live Iowa against Iowa State and Wrestling.
I'm Doug Brown with Chuck Patton.
And here again, Eglin is making the shot.
This time he came from the outside instead of inside Crash Kelly has made much offensive move yet his one takedown was a counter.
They haven't really penetrated deep and secured it.
Eklund got in deep a couple of times, but he didn't continue his motion and secure it.
Now there he is and he got it again.
But he has an improved disposition so that he almost got pulled out of position.
Now he recovered it.
Well.
It's imperative now that they hold on to this and stalemate it or improve it by getting himself in an upright position.
You could see a kind of disgusted look on Kelly's face, like, you got to get tougher.
No, what am I doing in this position?
You know, it takes time to get out of it.
Whether you lose the points or not, you have 50 seconds to go.
In the second period, it's three three between Eagle and then Kelly.
Eklund has made those penetrating shots, that's for sure.
He's the one that's got in deep.
He gets in there.
Now, here he is again.
He's in there now.
He's got he still doesn't have the takedown.
He's got to just be patient.
He has to be patient.
This position, Kelly, has to try to break the arm straight in order to be able to secure the counter.
There it is, 25 seconds to go in the period Harold Nichols and his last, to me, taking a worried look at the clock.
He's coming over to the lay scorers table now, but the wrestlers are back at it.
We're going to go first of all, there's the first shot by Kelly of any consequence.
Oh, he's in deep enough now.
The Whizzer is preventing the takedown right now.
He wants to try to come out, come over the head.
He wants to get those hips in first to see him try to step in front, wants to get out, get over the hip, and he can start to use 11.
But he couldn't do it.
Mike Brooks.
And it's three three.
All right.
Right in time now.
Not much.
19 seconds.
Let's find out what Harold Nichols has to say to Mike X Line there in my shot.
I can call stalling then.
Yes, I can.
Let's go.
And that key ask, can you call stalling against my man when he's trying to counter a shot here?
The officials say, yes, I can.
Just one of those judgments decisions I guess that he was questioning.
Mike X Line as the referee.
He's from Charles City.
There he is signaling for injury time.
Kelly has had a bad knee or a bad foot, actually, and he's over getting some look see and I'm getting some coaching.
He's mad.
Eklund You realize the fans, I hope that when you're injured you cannot receive coaching.
So the official always positions himself by the injured athlete to prevent the coaches from talking to him.
There's less, Anderson, who's very much in the running for the Iowa State job.
At intermission after £150.
We will show you an interview we did with West yesterday.
And Max Jurich, also the athletic director at Iowa State.
There is Matt.
And we're starting the third period there as no score.
It's three three right between Kelly and Egeland.
Now, Kelly likes to lead so.
Near us and see if he can break it to the mat and then put the leg down.
And that's what he wants to do, is get the legs in here.
He does have the legs.
And Haglund builds back up, gets to his feet.
And stop that one.
Potentially dangerous.
And we know Kelly likes to jam.
He likes to try to get the arm and pull the hips in and get that little hip tilt.
So we'll see if he can keep that arm free.
He just posted it to prevent that.
He's back on his feet.
Excellent.
Fighting the hands right in time could be important in a close match like this.
And Kelly has 48, 49, 50 seconds of riding time advantage.
If he could be your man has a minute or more.
It's a point at the end of the match.
But with this referee, he won't want to hang back too long.
He's going to have to be aggressive enough, at least make the referee feel that he's working toward some type of pinning situation.
Matt Hagelin, the junior from West Des.
Moines, Iowa, gets back to his feet again, fighting the hand.
Kelly will have to take him to the mat.
Now, I.
Think we're going to get a call.
A point goes up, get Kelly into Aguilar.
So I said The.
Responsibility to put the man back down on the mat belongs with the top man mountain.
That's what he saw was as an official.
Two or three of those little man didn't try to improve immediately and take him to the mat.
Now, Kelly starting to crank on the top.
He has a minute and 13 to go.
And here's Nick Herald.
Nichols has gone all the way to the Iowa bench to talk to Dan Gable.
And he probably wants to tell him, make this guy.
Five.
And he got out of state and now 6 to 3 against him right now.
Yes, he is.
And he's got on the right.
He just has to finish this position.
He's got the leg in force.
He's got his body up.
Right.
That's a good position he wants to be in now, needs to try to improve the Kelly was just waiting for it.
He needs a throw and he's now talking to officials saying call this one off.
The same with six for three to score.
Kelly is down by three.
And here's Hagelin putting Iowa out in front.
Kelly is in on the leg.
But he wants to do the same thing we were saying earlier.
He wants to pull it in close.
And keep it alive.
He's making the offensive shots, that's for sure.
Yes.
Three, six, five left takedown.
And is he out riding time that can make a tie out of it?
Yes, he does.
He has right time.
Clark is down.
And 9 seconds.
To go.
Kelly has right in time.
He can't have it taken away from him.
But if Hagelin gets out, he wins.
And Kelly can't be can't just sit on it.
You never know.
My next one might call it for Scarlett.
You're gonna want to speak.
There's that little slide left.
Three to.
One.
It's a half.
And right in time did matter.
6 to 6.
There were two penalty points in that third period.
And an escape for Eagle and a takedown for Kelly.
But the riding time saved him six, six.
And it's a two to a meeting at Iowa City.
It's a matter of degree of an upset, I would say.
Yes, Iowa.
Yes, it was a good match by Madigan.
Well, now here we go at 126, it's Iowa's Gary Davis making his last appearance at home in Adelaide after an illustrious career which has brought him already two national championships.
And last year, when he took a season off that Olympic silver medal, his opponent, his number five, ranked John Thorn, senior of Aldana and Davis, beat Thorn badly the first time 21 of the nine.
Was almost like he did a takedown demonstration on John Thorn.
And I'm sure that John Thorn is going to try to prevent that.
But just getting an early start in this match.
John Thornton grabbed the Iowa State colors on the right, Gary Davis.
And what interesting part of this is that very Davis is wearing the red shoes.
Davis hasn't started it because what he wants to do is get close enough to touch his man and form stayed out away from him.
So he's wrestling to the outside, making Davis finish closed down on him and chasing and then he pulls back out.
Now here's Davis in an left The Whizzer is preventing right now, but he's coming across control on those chips and still no takedown.
So he can still lock his hands now and he's in Davis two and four and nothing.
I remember telling Karen as a a let up by Davis makes it 2 to 1.
He wants to do takedowns again.
Remember years and years ago saying you don't step across a whizzer.
Dan Gable steps across a whizzer, but nobody else does.
And here is Barry Davis doing it too well.
He had the hips under control so much that Thorn couldn't use them against him.
Out of bounds.
Now, the difference in this match is the people watch it.
There's the young man that beat him for the man for the Olympic medal.
Japanese wrestling out at Iowa for a year, working out with the Iowa team.
I was going to mention what Davis does so well that you didn't see in the first match.
And you'll see one of the reasons why he scores so much on his feet is that he controls tie ups as you watch.
But as soon as there's a contact, he controls that position and maneuvers his man so that he's in position to score takedown.
John, it sounds easy, but when you watch it and here's a clear demonstration between 118 and this one when Davis gets in now right here, he's he's got control of the tire.
So he starts to control the head, move it down, move it to the side, Know a little fake with his body, you know, he counters well, but he's always, after.
Controlling the tire spin around and Apple picked up 41.
So he puts his hands on his opponent.
There's a reason he has his hands on him and.
There's a reason he's using his hands every time to.
Two Your work in the air read a warning against guard.
Just pops the head down, swings his body out a ways of the legs, aren't there?
Scores the takedown.
A warning against Arn.
He said Mike excellent set for working the edge.
It's 4 to 2, a two point lead for Davis, two takedowns to two escapes.
Davis does such a good job of that.
Now there's a deep.
Penetration on his feet.
We're definitely going to try and lift 6 to 2 no back.
Points because he rolled right on through that.
Davis running, going up again feels utterly confident on his feet against everybody.
That's true against anybody and everybody.
And one of the things he does so well, as I indicated, is when he gets there, see, I just pound down out of position.
His eyes working, your arms, your head, you know, And he comes in, he comes right on through.
He penetrates deep, stays in.
I always try to control.
The tie up in front of a takedown.
Take the three pawns.
Whizzer works against everybody else.
Davis pulls the hips in so close that the Whizzer is ineffective.
Because he gets the hips under control and it's 8 to 3 At the end of the first period at Iowa City, you're watching John Thorn ranked fourth.
Well, I tell you, it's a tough weight class when you got Barry Davis in it and John Thorn last has finished that set the big eight, they said highly ranked wrestler navigated two other weights, 118 and 134.
He placed in the Nationals at 118.
He's very good in this position.
This is John Thorne's best spot is on top.
He likes to ride hard.
He's very good at controlling the hips with that arm around the waist and then tries to take the arms away once he controls the hips.
That's that's a really strong suit for John Barnes to control in there.
Davis just got up to his feet right where Thorne made that mistake, dropped his hips on Thorne's throw down.
11 to.
Three and two back points, makes it 13 to 3 in favor of a little three time high school.
Champion, two time national champion.
Now, Thorne tries to throw and Davis just dropped his hips right when Thorne tried to throw, Davis dropped his hips.
And that's why that throw didn't work.
And he got the takedown in near fall.
Out of that one.
Look back at 26 to go in the second period, Gray Davis came away from that center mat there with a big smile on his face.
He he wants to look good On his last time out his senior year at Iowa.
He just has it looks like he has a lot of fun.
I'm sure he does, but he looks like it do.
Well, and you're better than everybody else.
It's surprising how much more fun it can be sometimes 13 to 4.
John Thorne of Iowa State also has had an illustrious career senior from Algona.
He hits that little strike single but didn't get in deep enough or get around the corner, See how Davis just works on the head, keeps his opponent off balance, always trying to control the tie up here.
He's going to just try to pull the arm off and then once he gets it off, you'll see him start to go right back into controlling the tire.
Always pressure him.
And he calls that.
Car very that time because it wouldn't let him back in.
That's the rule over here on the inside.
It you have to circle to let your man in, not just push him on out.
13 to 4 is the score.
With 28 seconds to go, here comes Davis around again.
Boy, controlling ahead the car staying with him this time trailing by nine was such a good job of that once you get down out of.
Position he's always working your head against you guys, keeping the head down your head goes down.
Then your instinct is to pick it back up.
And that's when Davis comes on to that.
Sometimes he doesn't pop the head.
He'll just pop on your shoulders, cuff on your arm.
That's the time remaining In the second period, 13 to 4.
And in that period, Davis had a take out of the nearfall.
Each man had an escape, so it was a 5 to 1 period for Davis, and Thorne is asking for time to play.
Now.
His back back or.
That knee made it come down on the knee real hard.
Davis was popping him down when he cuffs that head or cuffs those shoulders real hard.
Sometimes the weight when he pulls you down instead of landing on your nose because your arms are tied up, you'll drop to your knees.
And even though you have knee pads in these mats, they have a lot of shock absorbing quality.
Sometimes you will get a bruise.
We told you earlier about where to ride.
We'd like to know what you think of the college wrestling series, our ninth consecutive series.
And if you'll take time to let us know your thoughts about the coverage, we appreciate it.
Our address is College Wrestling Iowa Public Television Post Office Box 1758.
Des Moines, Iowa.
50306s Box 1758.
Des Moines 5030650306.
Both wrestlers are ready to go again.
You're watching Live The Hawks and the Cyclones from Kabul, Hawkeye Arena referee Mike X-Line brings them back out to the center.
It's Berry Davis, 126 for Iowa.
John Thorn 126 for Iowa State.
Davis leads 13 to 4.
After two periods, Egeland and Kelly went to a draw at one 1866, which in some respects was a moral victory for Iowa.
Definitely.
That's right.
And they really don't need to fire Davis up.
You know, he has all the all the fiery knees when he hits in that penetrating shot.
He's ended up his feet back all the way to get to that.
He still stays in position.
Mary Davis.
What to Perry High School.
He's from Cedar Rapids area both Iowa wrestlers now in on the high crotch goes Davis We.
Got good penetration but Gore kind of saw him coming so he countered it by just sliding off to the outside.
Now, what Davis is trying to do now is just maintain this position so he doesn't lose the takedown till he can control the hips.
He needs to stay right here.
He gets a takedown.
A takedown is called and gives Thorn the takedown 13 to 6.
Davis will just try to build back to his feet.
This is the position that Thorne likes so well.
But Davis doesn't let him have the arms.
That's why he can't just knock it down.
And it's now 13, 14 to 7, 14 to 7 because Thorne had an escape at the beginning of the period as to two Iowa State and Iowa in the mix.
And again, Thorne is having.
Problems with his knee.
They have 2 minutes of injury time and when that 2 minutes is out, perhaps you saw one of the other meets when somebody used up their injury time.
Yes.
When they started to wrestle again and then took a time out for an injury, that immediately meant that the match was over.
Because you only have those 2 minutes, you can't exceed that amount of time.
14 to 7.
After that escape by Davis, he leads by seven.
He had an 8 to 3 lead in the first period on four takedowns and a takedown and a near fall in the second period.
And Thorne got a takedown here in the third and he's hit on the leg again just momentarily.
That's all.
Davis does such a good job of countering any kind of offense that comes in time because he drops his hip.
You see, when he made his shot, he came right back up to his feet to maintain possession.
See, I just dropped.
Down to about 4 to 2 point takedown immediately, a relationship that.
There's that little snap.
And a point for going out of bounds.
That time he called Thorne from Iowa State for intentionally going out not to cut Davis a two point takedown just intentionally going out to avoid getting taken down.
There was an escape in there for Thorne.
And then the.
Point for penalty and again, this doesn't want to talk to the referee.
He's going to go tougher than he has got the hips in tight now.
You're not going to know it.
Throw the ball off the mat.
17 to 8.
Nine point lead for that man, Davis with one second to go.
It's over.
No riding.
Time, no riding time.
It is a major decision holiday for Perry Davis, who was waiting goodbye to the Iowa State fans.
And over he.
Goes, That's Kathy Gable.
Handing Perry big box of flowers.
I guess you know that it's the biggest cigar in the world.
I think it must be.
He's got to take the fires up, I think, to get him to smother.
That's Barry Davis, his.
Mother and his father.
Standing ovation for Perry Davis.
He won the Olympic silver in 1984.
Oh, plenty of emotional moments at Hawkeye.
Kamaka certainly are.
There we go at 134, gassy for Iowa State against Randall of Iowa, Greg Randall ranked third of a country he beat Gassy 65 five.
Their first meeting this year in the dual meet and it's now Iowa six Iowa state too after two matches.
He has he is one of those young guys that tends to want to work in close and Randall tends to like to shoot from the open position.
The thing about Randall from Iowa is that he's got great balance and you can work in close and try to throw him, but the balance can just come back and bite you.
Sort of like a snake that crawls up and then all of a sudden turns around.
You grab its tail and it bite you and have, you know, and he just has really a fine, balanced athlete.
Gassy is redshirt freshman from Worthington, Ohio for the Cyclones.
As one low speed open shots that's Randall tends to shoot a little more from the open and here's guess he got has a nice front headlock now he's he has him under control in the front headlock and he's running him in a circle.
What he needs to do is pull him away from his base.
He's got him going in a circle.
They need to be able to gain some kind of angle on it.
As long as he can keep that, he's got to take that.
He got the takedown.
It's Jesse of Iowa State jumping into the lead.
He hasn't got the arms under control, so the hips could get up.
Now you see Rambo on his feet fighting the hands to try to get his escape.
And he's out at two one this final.
Injury time out right here.
Gary got a runner.
There's Gary Davis.
Good.
Yeah, that's right.
See the shirt?
There is Greg Randall.
I'm not sure what the complaint is here.
Everybody.
Exactly.
Try to have a shot.
He's looking at it and the referee called it right now.
I want it to stop.
I don't know whether he got hit in the head.
He may have.
Dizzy or not.
The referee may have said, seen as his eyes were a little glazed.
It might have been that when he had him in the front headlock, he got choked off a little bit.
You know, the front headlock, sometimes as it comes across that carotid artery artery, if they have enough pressure on it when it turns sideways, it can almost make you black out.
All right.
But it got him an edge.
Well, we're ready to go with a minute.
22 to go in the first period of a 2 to 1 lead for the man in the Red Jesse against third ranked Randall.
Oh, yeah.
Then they get into this tie up position.
Neither one of us really controlling looks more like they're grabbing a hold and hanging on to it versus solid Davis getting that position.
He's always tapping on those arms, checking on that head.
We're not controlling the turf quite the same way.
More little bit of a slapping point kind of control rather than a definite control.
Here's Garcia.
Outside single, but he's on the edge of the mat.
This will go nowhere.
42 seconds to go.
Randall coming back to the center.
He's having a slow start.
Jesse is controlling and pretty well.
Jesse leads by one just kind of keeping him away from that close position.
Where he can't shoot that big night here.
If you gave that up just because he controlled the hit, he did.
It looked as if it wasn't.
It was not going to work.
It was too far away.
But Randall stayed with it and got all the way in.
It's 3 to 2 now in favor of Greg.
And Jesse lost his face.
That's a critical error, young man to make.
He wants to get in this position, reach back and look the head, Larry, scores this escape and it's three three.
He's back in that front headlock again.
This time he gave it up.
He pushed the head down.
Now he has it again.
Oh, he's got.
To push it in.
This needs to pull him into it like he did the first time.
And to the first.
Currie That's Randy Lewis.
He is filling in for Eddie Bannock right on the radio broadcast tonight.
Eddie Matic is coaching.
A team down in Cuba, but.
USA Team, it's an unusual tournament, as I understand it.
You have the wrestlers down there have to wrestle both Freestyle and Greco, so you need some experience in both three three.
Good first period.
That's jazzy on top.
Starting the second period against Greg Randall.
You can see him try to control the hips.
What he's doing right there is just trying to pull the hips over.
Now here, this is what they call a crab.
He pulls a man backwards right over top of him, sort of in a somersault, and then the legs on them, they come back to their base.
This kind of takes away in the hands of go to get up.
And here's Randall trying to just build to speak so get it broken.
Three, three right in time.
Well, there hasn't been much of 25 seconds in favor of Jesse, right?
Oh, that's Greg Randall.
He wanted a default the last time you saw him against Oklahoma State.
We understand that he's out for three.
Randall.
Three?
That our nice play on that.
That just a little hip heist out in front.
We understand that Smith of Oklahoma State did have a separated shoulder and they're hoping to get him qualified somehow the big H. Those things can heal up if you have enough time.
Now, Randall has a block across the body here.
He likes this because he has the balance to use it.
He needs just a little bit of pressure and trying to pull his man in in order to be able to create it.
He wants to pull him in.
If Jesse gives him the right kind of pressure, then he can throw it again.
He wouldn't go with it.
Stalemates called here 58 seconds to go.
In the second period at Carver Arena, Barber Hawkeye Arena.
Randall Again, there's a shot as this match goes.
Doug You see, Randall will keep this kind of pressure and intensity.
But yes, he's going to have to do is continue to wrestle aggressively, as he has now, to be able to keep Randall often.
Again, back to the center.
It's a 4 to 3 match, Randall by one.
And in the second, in the last period, Randall will be up.
BELL Coaches, both coaches, want the men to get in that low shot, you know, not stay up in here because this is this isn't going to be productive.
They want him to be able to get that low penetrating shot.
That's what's really paid off for.
The takedowns or even.
But Randall has one more escape.
Bell to stand off.
Now, Douglas, back in the center, Randall is coming.
Back as he gets he trying.
To circle here it comes as he made his offensive effort that time and the last couple of times he has just underhook it out.
Here's that fight.
However, he tried to put that on earlier this time.
He calls it, I think, potentially dangerous.
Right.
What was the end of the period?
So pressure took him out of it, but I don't see it.
Mike Excellent is down there looking closely to see how hole is going across the throws.
There's an Iowa fan.
We always pick out the youngest one in the crowd.
I think that's the candidate for the first two or three matches.
Greg Randall leads 4 to 327 seconds worth of writing time for Jesse as we start the third period.
Watch the build up in a hurry here.
This is a position he likes.
He likes that.
Short little set reach back and look to hit.
Randall tried to pull him back, but we lost him.
So he's got one point for the state right now, and.
We're even a car for one takedown apiece and two escapes.
And Randall has that same front headlock right now.
If Jesse doesn't have his hands locked.
There's just what they call a fourth strike.
Jesse tries to pull his arm.
Out of there just right out to the side.
Nobody's been warned yet.
In this match, there have been no penalties.
And it's even fourth for Randall coming in on the double leg.
This time, it.
Appears that Jesse hadn't.
Stopped with the Underhook and he's done that several times.
And Randall's in tight now.
Doesn't quite have the hips under control here.
And he doesn't have.
The pressure he's looking for.
You'll see him try to create the pressure.
It's exciting for the crowd, though.
You get up in a throw position like that.
I'm going to fight for that.
Well, yes, this is good.
And Jesse stops.
Let's see as he tries to go behind him right there.
This gives Randall a chance to step across.
Now the hips come, but you can see his foot is out of bounds.
And he he was out of bounds when he threw that.
Or it could have been a big five bagger.
Jesse of Iowa State, third period.
It's four four Randall against the redshirt freshman from Burlington, Ohio.
He was telling you about people who have to wrestle both Freestyle and Greco at one time, like two years ago, Jock as he won the World Elite championships in both Freestyle and Greco.
So he knows that position too, doesn't it?
Yeah, he must.
Well.
I'm sure that right now he can't get any help because the referee's over there preventing that.
But you see, the Iowa coach is talking to Randall and he's getting all kinds of suggestion and advice on what they would like him to do to get rid of this 4 to 4.
It's Iowa against Iowa State.
Greg Randall hoping to pick up an NCAA title this year.
Last year, he got the second and his first try after a Big Ten championship.
Those are the how many titles Iowa has won.
As we said in the opening, they've won seven in a row.
That's a remarkable feat.
Well, there's, as I indicated, a chance this year to get number eight, which would be a a first ever for anybody in wrestling, and they have the team to do it.
Jesse.
Right.
We're going to see a big match next at 142, by the way.
Don't go away.
Joe Gibbons and Kevin Dressler.
Gibbons reached the number one spot in the rankings this week in a terrifically tough weight class.
Kevin Dresser looks terrific last week at 142 against Oklahoma State.
Now it's Jesse and Randall.
It's four four here with less than a minute to go.
Jesse, Try it on outside singles.
Couldn't make it three his blocking off with Underhook Randall and it's no takedown yet Yep across and there's a knee in bad shape right here.
Oh boy.
I'll tell you.
Mike X line didn't see that a moment too soon.
No, that's one that this time of year everybody wants that call, no matter how close you are to that knee up now.
And it's really a tragedy for a young man.
Or for a half a minute to go.
Six two Iowa leads Iowa State after two matches, a warning.
Against Jesse.
A warning continuing now.
Randall has been blocked off by Jesse every time with the Underhook, but now.
He's really starting to try to find a control to tie.
Up position a little more.
Now they become a match of strategy.
Now get the other stalling call.
19 seconds to go.
Randall Win on the road.
I don't think I have to turn the corner in order to build a spark.
Oh, What?
Hey, boy.
Oh.
He's back in there again now.
We have five.
Seconds to go.
So goes under hooks, looks at Jesse, puts on a really take and rambles off, and it's over.
I draw to the extreme displeasure of the Iowa crowd.
It's a draw.
Four, four.
No riding time.
Jesse comes makes up 11 points on Randall from the last time Greg won the first 16250.
It took away all Randall's offense with that underhook every time he tried to come.
So sure that they'll be making some changes in this style before they get to the national tournament.
Two draws we've had now we're at 142 and as we say, this is one the folks came to see, the number one ranked Joe.
Kevin's in the red on the right against Kevin Dresser, ranked number five.
But there isn't much to choose from.
Among these first five men of this way.
Almost could be anybody any given week.
Gibbons beat Dresser at Ames 9 to 6, and Gibbons is in on the leg against a dresser wizard.
Give us a starting fast in this match yes.
He yes.
He's got that for the two point take and you get this Joe Gibbons a couple of points like this.
He has really one tough armory to beat.
Now he has that outstanding talent and has the ability to be able to put a lot of pressure on a man.
He knows a lot about wrestling, can wrestling all different positions.
To do nothing?
GIBBONS starts fast.
When he has this inside wrist, he has the risk tied up.
What he's trying to do now is just keep this man from getting up and scoring.
Don't want to have to go back and wrestle.
Nice move by Jesse with one, get Gibbons going one way and then he just punched his leg out, went out away from sin.
A lot of good, £142 matches this year.
It's a very difficult weight class.
Again Gibbons in on a low single.
And he hits that single low very well does that a lot but the referee feels is that's potential.
Any time you drop down below the knee you can start to take the heel out away from the leg socket.
And here it went.
Joe Gibbons all the way in on a double.
And he's he's he's aggressive tonight.
He goes like this, Doug it really is the best time.
£42 wide open like this is when he's at his best.
It's Gibbons leading by three 4 to 1 against Kevin Dresser after something of an upset.
I want 34 to because Randall could get away only with a draw.
Joe Jesse held Randall to a draw.
So just let Dresser go right there for the one point escapes, it makes it four, two, two.
Four, two after the escape.
Now this is a position dresser would rather have a hold of Gibbons.
I'd rather he'd rather having them control.
Now, here he is.
Just kind of throw away both men.
Good talent, good balance.
He has that five five block there.
But Gibbons is showing you his power here.
He's got such great balance and he wants to keep that by and close and let Gibbons get the upper hand right here, right now.
He's just staying in close, keeping the fight to his chest.
Gibbons is trying to take the hips and lift them up over top level aggressive and get his leg across and he has a chance.
Boy, what a what a pair of horses.
A tail fight, athletic talent.
Right.
What you're seeing right here, a heck of a lot of wrestling right there for no point stalemate.
I'll tell you.
A lesser man would have gone down to either one of those guys in that situation.
Florida to.
I don't know about you, Chuck.
This is kind of I can say.
I love it.
DRESSER And what a what a career he's having already and he's he has another year to go there.
Both juniors Humboldt Iowa's Kevin Dresser and Joe Gibbons one of two Gibbons.
And this is a position that Dresser would rather have Gibbons in rather have him in where he can control him and touch him.
Gibbons would rather be in the open position.
We have 17 seconds to go in the first period.
It's really only a two point match, though.
Gibbons By two, he had the two takedowns.
He has a front headlock now.
Russell slid in on that shot but didn't quite penetrate it well, so he got caught underneath.
He went for the.
Five block and soft and let us see we have the end of the period it's harder to gibbons here a lot of applause here for a fine fine 3 minutes.
There was a but 45 seconds of action and that was just fantastic.
Gibbons choice he takes down there's Kevin Dresser.
He's two fine wrestlers from Iowa high schools, Dresser from Humboldt.
And then he looked tough against Leo Bailey last night.
Oh, he was just impressive.
That just really outstanding.
He's good in this position.
If he can keep his man down, he wants to get Gibbons hips down to the mat.
Gibbons wisely just picked off the hand when he got to his feet.
Four scores escape.
An escape for Gibbons, 5 to 2.
Remember at intermission after 150.
And we'll be talking to Max York and less Anderson of Iowa State.
You interviewed him yesterday about the coaching vacancy at Iowa State.
That's coming up.
And also, we'll meet the two Iowa assistant coaches, Keith Moreland and Mark Johnson.
Harrison Gibbons got a little out of position and Dresser came over the top of the head.
Lot of dressers been doing all the going so far.
You know Gibbons got that early lead and hasn't really gone on the offense and Dresser has been doing most of the aggressive wrestling.
He hasn't scored with it, but he's going to do most of the work on his head again.
Now, he just Dave Gibbons just got called for stalling one for on and he came right back in.
Oh Dresser is really cute for that tipping stuff.
He says he can put you in a bad spot in a hurry.
Yes, he can.
And what Gibbons do in here to wisely stay out of that as he stand on his feet, you go to your knee and post a knee.
That's when Dresser really has a chance to get those tips because your knees down, Right?
Oh, here we go.
I know Mark Gibbons has been warm, Dresser has not.
Next time it would be a point.
Oh, Mike, excellent calls Gibbons again here comes dresser in and that high crotch but Gibbons is blocking Yeah.
Well he got into it but he just didn't get his hips in underneath it so he got the legs but he didn't get his hips in.
But as you say, Gibbons hasn't been on the offense since early in the match.
And he got that late and he just kind of stopped.
Don't get me that stalemate.
That won't happen too many more times.
25 seconds to go.
Aggressive stays on the.
Not a single by gibbons as the whizzer from dresser.
He countered that well and then came right back in on it sure the right now at the bottom is waiting for a stalemate to be called here.
And there it is.
That's the stalemate back in the middle again with what?
One second left to go in the second period.
It's a three point lead for Gibbons, 5 to 2 period ends.
Gibbons will go up.
Now, Harold Nichols, after 37 years, this is his last duel meet tonight.
He had a very warm greeting from the Iowa fans.
Emotional moments here before this made started.
He's had these kids wrestling.
Well, to Doug, you compare what was happening last last time through the 134.
Yes.
12 to nothing.
And now it's eight four.
That's right.
Egan and Kelly went six six.
Davis beat Dawn 17 to 8, and Randall and Kasey Drew 4 to 4.
Top man.
Let's go, guys.
He got a takedown early and good.
So Greg Randall only got one later on.
Here's Gibbons in the opposition, starting with a three point lead in the third period.
He's got on top, obviously, as his dresser.
Dresser does little things that matter.
You know, you see him try to just get a little sidewall right there, but he didn't have his body in underneath.
So Gibbons countered him out of it.
Brian Gibbons had the hand.
Tied up a moment ago.
Now he has it again.
But that Chris was on the feet, it kind of let him get up there.
This is a spot where he can get called for strong again.
He's going to have to work aggressively right here.
Gibbons bars the nearside arms.
He gets the arm.
The referee kind of looks at us.
Is he getting off to the side, working on something, or is he just kind of playing with me?
The official I'm making it look like he's being aggressive.
Warning on the bottom this time.
So we're even.
Each man has been warned and.
Gibbons has riding time.
As I said, you give him a lead.
He got that when I got that lead early.
He is very difficult to do.
He has the hammerlock now.
He's put it into a chicken wing or a balm.
So now what he's going to do is just be able to get out toward the head.
In order to make that thing work out.
And this is what they call a turkey bar.
When he gets the arm out on the hip.
Potentially dangerous hold.
But Gibbons got a lot of riding time out of that.
He can only get one point and there's no way he can lose that point.
So for all purposes here, for practical purposes, it is now a 6 to 2 match.
That puts a lot of pressure on Russell to start.
Now.
He tends when he gets to his feet.
If Gibbons lifts the hips to come back down and put his head down, kind of worm back in underneath.
Yeah.
So it's important right now not to go out flat, so I just let it down flat.
So he's got to get back to the base and there he tries one of his little wing or you see him elevating with the leg.
Didn't work.
Yeah.
He's got to be able to have those hips freed up.
Gibbons has been in control of this match much more than perhaps anybody might have expected who had seen the way Dresser has been wrestling lately.
It started at so early.
Now he hasn't really gone out after the fall, but he's just controlled it, just steady the dresser, let him have the arms and he winds pretty easy.
And with a riding time of zero wrestling all the way up that period, it's Joe Gibbons ranked number 162 to the winner over Kevin Dresser.
And that puts this me in a one point situation Iowa State trails by one after 142 Joe Gibbons has defeated Kevin Dresser 6 to 2.
Now we're going to have a rematch here at 150 Heffernan of Iowa against Jackson of Iowa State that Heffernan lost to Jackson the last time Jackson started fast and looked very good.
He's in on the leg again and immediately Jackson double leg.
Two points.
He hits those nice doubles and he gets a good extension on him, takes his body on him, gets the two point takedown.
Here's Stafford and back to his feet now trying to fight the hands off you get through.
Iowa crowd getting a little restless because Iowa State certainly started.
Well, they're trailing by one point, but I don't know if they thought cyclones were going to be this close after £142.
I don't think they thought that anybody would be close after the meet last fall.
I'll tell you this, Jackson, this where.
Jackson did such a good job on Heffernan last time he choppy arm took him away and then controlled the arms and didn't let Heffernan get to his feet.
Russell Where he feels comfortable, he wants to keep him down on the mat and Heffernan wisely tries to get to his feet and fight hands up three!
But you know, they're out of.
Bounds.
You know that Stuart Carter has been at 154 Iowa State.
He's even ranked, as a matter of fact, six.
But my understanding is that Jackson beat him in practice and of course, he beat Heffernan the last time out.
So there are a couple of reasons for Larry Jackson being here.
I'd say those are good reasons.
Yes.
When you beat him out, you've beaten the number two ranked man in the country.
He's really good on top.
He just controls the arms and doesn't let those hips get up.
Heffernan wants to get to his feet.
Here's where he wants to be up hips out.
Trying to score that escape.
Jackson Just try to stay.
In behind in that control.
This is how you get off the floor.
And if you don't work aggressively.
He already has a minute of riding time.
Jackson of Iowa State on top and the referee does a lot of counting.
You can hear him sometimes what is counting.
He has to make a visual and verbal signal to the wrestlers and the coaches that he's counting.
If somebody is not trying to.
Improve and that's when he makes his calls, either stalling stalemate, one man on the other.
Now, Jackson hit a shot off the double.
He couldn't get.
It all happened again.
But Jackson with a bear hug takes him right back to the mat like him off his hands when his opponent's hips come up.
And he doesn't have a supporting weight.
On his knees.
So that's when Jackson locked and pulled the hips and just carried him right on up and dumped him back down.
Good maneuver on Jackson's part.
He's good here.
He's good on top.
And Heffernan has had trouble.
Now he's out with the line, the little duck out the back door.
It's 2 to 1 Jackson against Pepper, man.
Most cyclones in the horse.
But we know what Jackson likes to do.
He wants to be able to get Heffernan reach in and then he hits that double and carries right on through.
And there's the double.
They didn't penetrate.
It happened and didn't quite control up.
So Jackson's back in control.
I tell you.
You sort of has Jimmy's number and the looks of it.
Wrestles him like he owns him right now.
So far, anyway.
So far at the time they met in Ames, Heffernan was ranked number one.
Half of that is now number two.
Jackson's going to have total control.
So far, he has the arms tied up, has the hips broken down.
He hasn't taken any kind of chances to turn him, but he does have control of that.
4 to 1 is a score stalling on the bottom against Heffernan.
With just a few seconds left, end of the period.
End of the first period, I'll tell you.
Say it again.
It's now he's got the hips in now watching.
Just take a step big step drops the hips and just let some slide on down.
You Step blocked Heffernan's ability to move away from it the him dropping the hips let that thing work.
Outside trip Well Heffernan was redshirted last year after a big championship year in 1983 when he was a freshman, he finished fourth in the NCAA.
There's Jackson.
He's from Marshalltown.
The best he ever did in high school was a fifth at the state championships.
And he came on in that junior college championship to me and he's been in been wrestling very well.
And Lucian.
Iowa leads the meet 8 to 7.
It's very close and Jackson is ahead of Heffernan for two one.
Dan Cable one of his old coach to feel good in his final dual meet but I don't think you wanted him to feel this good.
I don't think so.
Jackson's done such a good job of controlling Heffernan hips.
When Heffernan gets up, Jackson pulls the hips in, he doesn't get his hips free, so he drops down the leg and then he picks it up.
Gets back up.
He's allowed to do this to stay with his opponent.
He just can't stay there.
But as long as there's a bonus coming up and going out, he can continue to do that right here, Gable said.
All he's doing is riding that right.
And Heffernan is going to have to do now is have his hand control, get to his feet, have hands controlled, and.
Then get his hips out and then just didn't quite get the hands under control.
So when he got his hips out.
Then the hand he's out, he got going about 4852 for a reversal, two for a near fall and one to Jackson for an escape.
And it's five, five just like that.
Here's a position that both men want to control.
Let's get the other man moving, not just hang on it, but move it.
The Iowa crowd has come alive now.
Jackson could make his 4 to 1 lead stand up for.
The last 44 seconds of the second period.
What a man.
What a man is just standing still.
It's very similar to shooting ducks.
You know, one of those little shooting gallery feels easier move when you're one of the ducks.
It's more than a little harder to hit and you don't want to stand still.
Who goes to get the other man moving the ball?
He didn't penetrate that double.
Bill Heffernan counted him out of it.
But you can feel the momentum champs feel about that if the offense starts to change, that's for sure.
Jackson has not penetrated the doubles and happened to start to control the times.
Iowa State.
Wrestlers up on the edge of the map got to.
Be aggressive here.
Heffernan has come from behind.
It was 4 to 1 down.
He's now five five in a couple hours ago now.
He didn't have the hips in control.
Jackson drops in the fighting about.
But he's on the offense.
He's trying to this dropped.
He didn't penetrate it just dropped.
That's the point I was making is that early Jackson was penetrating those instead of dropping.
He was he's going in now.
He's coming in deep on this, trying to control that thing.
Now watch happen and just use it to throw the arm lifts, Elevate turns him right over.
And that was a four point move.
Back, four point.
Three.
Now we're ready to go.
The third period has been Jackson's.
Demise in a way, hasn't.
It?
Bugaboo, a few times this year.
He's out now immediately.
Because he's got control of the situation, because he has riding tide and the and the lead.
So he's got to get on his offense again and not wait for Heffernan to get started.
Heffernan trailing by one, and he's also trailing actually by two because there's riding time for Jackson and there's no way that Heffernan can make it up.
You can see that, you can see that you might as well give him their penetrating.
Offense if they're going to go to the low level.
They've got to be able to work their man's head, get him out of position, either sideways or coming up in order to be able to hit that.
Now he's in a.
Single number, has got to be after he gets on up.
But life is just keeping him safe.
Jackson Real nice counteraction there.
Well, Jackson has the only two takedowns.
In this match.
Heffernan has not taken Jackson down and.
This points came in a reversal a near fall.
Besides, he escaped Jackson by one.
Oh, and we're getting late.
It's in the last minute now.
There's a side single by Heffernan, but he just doesn't.
Get his body on right now.
It's just a two run single leg roll going.
Got to get his hips and close and get up with a very low head position.
Jackson has the underhook and he's out.
That took about 20 seconds and.
Time is a factor here.
Heffernan needs a takedown actually for a brawl.
That's the Iowa State bench to see Nate Carr on the left, there's less Anderson.
On the right, Harold Nichols, a spot back on the bench.
Just a peek to the assistant.
See that Iowa eight Iowa State, seven urban two draws and each team has won a match.
Davis won his on a major decision.
And that's the difference.
Half a minute to go third period.
All he got in that position where he just dropped down the but try to control it just drop it.
You got to get on three down Jackson is it on the leg?
That's what happened and does not want to be Takes up too much time.
He wants to be able to control his position, continue to work on.
That one out of out.
We have 4 seconds to go.
Well, I think Jackson's got to win another.
It looks that way, doesn't it?
And I'll tell you, we're going to go to intermission with the Cyclones leading.
There it is.
It's all over.
And Jackson has with riding time.
Made it a 7 to 5 victory when these teams went to intermission last time, Iowa led 12 to 6.
This time the Cyclones, led by a score of 10 to 8.
Now the cyclones of Iowa State have jumped back up on top.
And there you see Bill Kelly and Joe Gibbons after congratulate Larry Jackson, the victorious wrestler at intermission.
The score is 10 to 8.
As we mentioned earlier, the retirement of wrestling coach Harold Nichols is creating very interesting situation at Iowa State.
And now during intermission here, we want to take the opportunity to show you what we did yesterday.
I talked to two of the gentlemen in the midst of the story, Iowa State Athletic director Max Jurich, and assistant wrestling coach Les Anderson.
Max, the Iowa State wrestling program.
Has been one of the biggest and best in the United States for.
Years.
And what kind of person has to run it?
You're right, Doug.
It is one of the best, one of the finest and one of the biggest.
And we take a lot of pride in that.
And our intentions is not to alter that in any way.
Our intentions are to improve upon that and in the years to come, in the very near future, I think we'll do that.
It does call for some special kind of leadership and the kinds of to handle a position of this magnitude.
I think that of all in all the coaching positions, head coaching position is one criteria that I think is very important.
And because of the emotional ups and downs in coaching, not just the victories of the meets or the games or the matches, but also in the recruiting and other demands put upon the head coaches that a person has to be very emotionally stable and predictable terms of how they respond in certain situations and circumstances.
So I think the maturity of a person emotionally and the stability of that is very critical.
Additionally, I think the person has to have an X factor, something that that almost can't articulate.
There's just something about them that that says that they are something special.
And that's kind of a subjective thing to evaluate.
But that certainly is an attribute that would weigh heavily and who we finally settle on.
Everybody wants to know Max has Dan Gable said he won't take the Iowa State job.
Doug I've said from the beginning that I would not discuss individuals in any way in this.
I won't discuss Dan or anyone who I've talked to, who I want to talk to, who have called me and have solicited my attention to them, or who I've called and tried to generate perhaps some interest.
I think it's fair to say that I've talked with a wide range of people.
Everyone expects me to talk.
Dan Gable I have talked with Dan Dan's talk with me.
I've talked with Harold Nichols, I've talked with less Andrus and I've talked with a lot of people not quite coast to coast.
And I appreciate their insights.
And we don't always talk about the head coaching position either.
That would be an incorrect assumption on your part.
And perhaps others assume that every time you with someone, it's about the head coaching position.
That's not that's not true.
It's about a wide range of things.
But it does deal with with college wrestling and amateur wrestling.
Are you concerned about the recruiting.
The Not a bit.
Not a bit.
I feel great about the recruiting and that comes from the feedback I've gotten from recruits and from young men that are considering Iowa State.
There isn't any way that we're going to do anything but improve our program here.
And I don't say that in disrespect of Harold Nichols in any way, but I think it is time Nick accepted the position that it's time for him to retire.
We accepted his decision is firm and it is the opportunity to inject some new blood and some new feeling.
And that's exactly what we're going to do.
Let's every once in a while someone will say that Iowa State might be just a little bit behind in the trends of national and international wrestling and that maybe the new program is going to need at the head coach level or the assistant coach level, some sort of new blood.
Now, what do you have to say about that?
I'd like not to think that we're out of step with what's taking place.
You know, last year was the first year that Iowa State been as low as seventh.
In other words, out of the top four for years and years and years.
And it is not a rewarding feeling.
The only rewarding thing that came out of that was the number of disgruntled fans who step forward.
And that's good because, I mean, they've had years and years of being spoiled.
It never hurts to have an influx of outside ideas and different approaches to it, but I like to think that myself.
I stay abreast of what's taking place and what is evolving.
Let me follow up on this outside blood question by asking you, would you be willing to hire if you were the head coach, someone like Ed Banach over at Iowa, who is brand new and comes from a winning program, even If it's a rival program.
I look at people, not what programs that they've come out of on the basis that their arrival.
I would look at a person and what they can contribute to the program here in reference to their background as far as a technician and as far as maybe what the background pattern of preparation has been for them as an individual, I want to look at the total contribution.
Just because someone can perform exceedingly well on the mat does not mean they can coach.
It does not mean that they can shuffle the necessary papers that go along with coaching.
Coaching is by far deeper than just going out and recruiting and being up in the room traveling with the squad, sitting on the bench and hollering in the corner.
There's a lot of paper shuffling that goes along with it.
That is the vital necessities of support.
Part of the program.
Well, Max, Uric refers to something as an X factor in a coach.
You never know what that X factor is going to be, but you hope to get it if you brought it into this program, what do you think your X Factor is?
My X factor probably is my ability to organize and to try to maintain a time schedule on getting things done and to get them done thoroughly.
There is less.
Anderson.
You're looking now at Jay Robinson, a former assistant here at Iowa and also an applicant for that Iowa State job would last is a very good prospect for that position.
We have just a second here.
Check.
Dan Gable told us that he really doesn't think he's interested in that job and who do you think are the candidates besides Leslie?
And how about Eddie Manek as an assistant?
Maybe we haven't talked to him either.
We've heard about some of those.
And I think that would be interesting for all the fans to realize that there are three or four head coaches around the United States and a couple of levels that probably have the expertise but just really can't get involved right now because they're trying to wind up a season with their own team and the recruiting that goes along with that.
Right, said Eddie Banach is in Cuba, by the way, coaching a USA team.
And tonight we're going to meet two reasons why the University of Iowa's wrestling team is going strong there.
Assistant coaches Keith Mahlum and Mark Johnson.
Let's meet them off the mat.
Yeah.
To keep a successful program like Iowa's successful, you need a devoted coaching staff preparing the wrestlers for the season.
Don't forget.
I feel very comfortable with the people I work with.
I think Mark Johnson, I number one assistant, Keith Moreland, who is basically the number two assistant, are working well together and they're working well, me and the people around the program.
And from that standpoint, I feel that that's a key and into a successful program.
I was for what I think is lot different than most simply, I think because of the hard work ethic here, Dan Gable is and still this hard work philosophy about training and about in-season offseason programs I think is a lot different than anywhere else in the country.
I'd have to agree with that.
After you've been around some of the programs, I think I would definitely is probably one of the hardest working programs in the nation.
And I think the reason is because of Dan himself.
He's such a great motivator.
And I think I you know, I can I think I can speak for Mark when I say this, that he motivated The Wrestler, but he also motivates myself as a coach.
Mark and myself come in early in the morning around seven.
We work out ourselves and we're usually busy until ten in the morning, putting through different wrestlers, through weight workouts, running workouts, techniques, issues.
And there's just always people in here working out there, putting in that extra time to become a champion.
Dustin or John Regan as well.
I tend to work with of the lighter weights a little more, and Dan tends to work with no weights.
And then of course, mark most of the heavier weights and we all take I'll take three or four or five guys, each of us, and we all kind of split at trying to work with those guys.
I just After him, after him, come on, you can start him.
You start anybody.
Keith Moreland knows cable system from the inside.
He wrestled for Iowa and was the 1977 Big Ten champ national runner up.
He was also a two time United States Wrestling Federation champion in 1981 and 1982.
His International experience includes being a titlist in the prestigious Werner Sealand Binder Wrestling tournament in East Germany.
I finally got to the point where I didn't know whether I wanted to compete or anymore, and the situation arose that you and I.
So I decided maybe I should give coaching a try.
So I've been.
Was it you and I the past two years?
But when an opportunity arose at his alma mater, he chose to make a change.
I have some high goals for myself in coaching and there's no better place to learn or person to learn.
And from Dan Gable, there's just something about the way that he coaches that, you know, the wrestlers want to win and he doesn't really pressure them to win.
It's just and they're not really expected to win.
It's just that the way he trains them is motivational aspects.
You know, when they go out there Mark Johnson got his collegiate wrestling experience at Michigan as a wolverine.
He finished second twice in Nationals losing to Iowa all-American Chris Campbell.
Mark is a former AEW champion and United States Wrestling Federation.
Titlist.
I came up to Iowa as a graduate assistant when I was training for the 1980 Olympic team.
I was on their 1980 Olympic team and Greco-Roman wrestling at £198.
And it was during that time I came associated with the program here and and really find out how good it was.
Just come on, your tired.
Your ass and his style.
Get out of the street.
I'm not going to take a head coaching job just to take a head coaching job.
There's not too many head jobs in the country that are better than being an assistant coach at Iowa.
Wrestling is important.
You're reviewing one of the stations of Iowa Public Television.
As we come back, live to Carver Hawkeye Arena.
That is the score.
Yes, sir.
It's Iowa State by two after £150, college wrestling.
And next Saturday night at 630 Live, our annual state wrestling championships of Iowa.
Chuck Patton.
And I'll be back doing that one, too.
Well, Chuck, here we are at £150.
We got a little upset going here.
I'd say it's major proportion through 100 and.
That's right.
But the strength of the Iowa lineup is coming.
Well, they have strength all the way through.
Give these cyclones credit.
They actually turned out with less than they thought they would have After 118, Ireland held Bill Kelly or they each held each other.
And let's put it that way to a draw.
John Thorn ran up against the buzzsaw again.
Barry Davis and Davis had a major decision.
They made up 78.
Then Greg Randle could get no better than a draw with Joe Ceci for four for Joe Gibbons beat Kevin Dressler 6 to 2 and Larry Jackson at £150 for the Cyclones, beat Heffernan for the second straight time, 7 to 5.
Now that means that Iowa has won only one match and five.
That says something about Iowa State's intensity.
I believe that we have really come out and wrestled hard.
In the next half.
So we get the Kistler brothers first for Iowa, the talent of the California boys, the young men from California.
Marty Kistler at 158, Lindley Kistler at 167, they'll wrestle Dave Ewing of Iowa State and Mike Van Arsdale at 167 for Iowa State.
Rico Chaparral comes up at 177 against Bob Garcia.
That's a rematch.
Temporarily won the first one Duane Goldman ranked number one in the country goes against John Hierapolis at 190.
He won the first one over and then a heavyweight, Steve Wilber, wrestles Darrell Peterson.
And Peterson of Iowa State won the match at.
And we're ready to go at 158.
It's Jung in Red Bull Iowa state against Martin Kessler ranks number one for Iowa in the black.
That Marty Kessler is trying to bring his team from behind the Hawks trail 10 to 8.
I don't think they thought they to be in this position.
But Iowa's lineup balance just continues.
So it'll be interesting to see what happens here.
Those intermissions tend to change a little bit of momentum.
We'll see what happens.
Now.
They really do don't seem that several times even this year, especially.
When you got it going.
Sometimes you don't.
You just do not stop.
Now, Kessler is one of those wrestlers that likes to be able to control the tie up and then move off of it.
And of course, it is until you're able to see these boys in this position more than just in the open.
They didn't wrestle the first time Bob Kaufman was on the dual meet against Iowa State.
There's a warning against viewing immediately here from Mark's ex-wife to Mike.
Explain the referee, Charles Julian, uncomfortable on a double leg.
We had that nice and deep and he got good elevation, good lift out of it.
But Kessler reached over and grabbed the ankle that prevented him from being able to pivot his hips around.
Now he's in a little better shape.
But Kessler has the wrist.
I believe once you can pull the wrist, it makes a difficult position here to take the.
Giving almost over shot that double.
If you could do such a thing.
You penetrated a deep and that's what you have to do.
I think it probably surprised both of them that he was in there that deep.
That's a pretty good sign that you want to go back and do it again.
Marty Kessler in black on the left.
That's the black, if and I call that the Cardinal three.
They're just really not moving out of this position that they're in.
And he calls his helmet.
But what they're not doing is controlling the tie up again.
They're just getting at the time.
And Daryl Peterson, heavyweight at Iowa State, will be up in the last match of the night against Steve Wilber.
I'm sure the Cyclones would like to see it come down to that.
Yes.
The good thing is that even when they lock up like this and they don't improve, it's difficult to just execute an offense from there.
You're not moving your opponent.
You're in a locked up position.
Any time you start to make any kind of movement, he can feel and react.
If there's a nice side single by going.
On the trail again, He touched his touch.
The head of the hand.
He came back.
On.
He has the wrist control Kessler from Iowa as the wrist control.
So even though you're in desert now, he drops him down.
They call it a dunk.
There's a nice little drop.
That Kessler down on the back.
They just got the take.
It's a takedown for you.
And this is what they call a double wrist slot.
But you see Kessler having let go with one hand, but he still has the wrist locked up.
The doing is on top and he's getting riding time here.
But he can't be making a lot of progress because of his position.
His head locked up inside.
There's a stalemate.
And he doesn't want to get off those hips when he's like that, because with that risk tied up, the man can get to his hips and then use the wrist against him.
So he did what he had to do it.
Just stay there.
Marty Kessler, he is ranked number one this year.
Viewing went to the leg right away, the ankle pick to stop the first move.
He's going to have to come off it.
And when he did, he came up and chopped the arm nicely.
Once you have the arm, then you can go after the hips as they took away the arm first, then took away the hips, then keeps the pressure on and he drops down on that ankle.
That's what officials look for and more.
He just can't do much of that as he used to.
Force the hips out clean.
But you can follow it nicely.
They got the hips out.
But they didn't control the hands.
And as a result.
The killer escaped a 49 second ride for you in the first period.
And he leads Kessler two to nothing.
There's Harold Nichols.
Maybe he can sniff one of those old time sneaky ones, huh?
He's got wrestling tonight.
There's Ewing, his first year of wrestling.
A lot of state Kessler on top, trailing by two.
He chose the down position to see if he can earn another escape.
And he's pretty good at the switches, right?
If he gets this, he does a pretty good job of getting the switches in there.
And I think he might have hurt himself right then.
We'll be interesting to see what they get out of this position.
Ewing has some kind of injury.
But I heard him yell, Oh.
God, look, look like he had to hurt his back when he.
Went down right there.
But he's not going to stop.
He's coming back to the middle.
Kessler was erased all the 19 seconds of the writing time Ewing of Iowa State on the bottom but trail but leads to nothing on the team score and the Hawks trail Iowa State up ten to and the team scores.
This is what Kessler didn't want to do is get to his feet doing does a nice job of carrying.
The hands and cutting away for his escape.
Three zip as the score.
We're always interested now, Doug, in saying, how did you get ahead by three here?
How did you get ahead of a good guy like this By three?
No, by wrestling offensively.
So keep on doing that.
And he it didn't get the single this time though.
He made a nice.
Counter move against the college.
Well, she did.
Kessler has to get on the offense he really hasn't generated in th Doesn't put an end to it.
But it's hard to generate offense when you're like this type.
They reach the edge of the mark.
Right now.
He really wants a timeout.
There's Dan Gable going on to tell his man what has to be done.
I think we saw him injury back one of the other meets that we were working and it may be that he still has it.
It was his ribs or his back right.
That to me was a looks like the back the way they're working on his arm, shoulders over the head.
There are some more of the fans here.
See where they were at during the intermission in the concession stand.
I think that's why they had the intermissions these days, don't you, Jack?
Yeah.
They let him not get out there and buy that popcorn.
You bet.
They Here we go again.
It's three to nothing in favor of Ewing.
Kessler still has not what his score on the board.
It just hasn't really wrestled in the offensive possessions or in a tie up like this without really generating.
I think it might get him called for solid if he can continue to push him out.
But he hasn't got the offense that he needs.
Kessler gets into the number one position.
He's out.
Try something a little bit different.
Balls are 12 or below.
They had a double warning because neither man is gliding since you had already been warned earlier, Kessler got one point for.
On the edge of the mat.
That's still going to tie up.
The start to become a little bit of a strategy match right here.
Now, you can out of that position, as long as he has his head in there, it's not going Kessler's way.
And I would think that if you watch the coaches, you don't want to increase his tempo here pretty soon.
Get out of the car.
And that's the end of the second period.
And after two periods, you're talking to Jim Gibbons there.
He sees that score three zero.
The hawk wrestler Marty Kessler has not scored yet.
The U.S. is pretty good on top of pick and pick ankle.
That's how he usually stops His now is to pick an ankle to stop him and then come up and chop the arm.
And the Hawks would like to get the crowd back into it, too, because they're sitting on their hands right now.
It's Ewing's responsibility here to try to improve his position.
Take that man to the man with the stature.
Now he's kind of hanging.
Now this is what the referee will look.
This is he trying to put his man down and improve it?
It was just trying to hold him up.
So there's no riding time advantage.
Not enough.
The athletic up by 34 seconds worth for you.
It is if he beats him on the ankle again.
That's what's stopped Kessler the last several times.
So yes, the ankle that takes the first move away.
Now he's looking for it to try to improve it rather than just hanging back on two, three.
That's one more day.
That's you.
That's a point.
That's because he was locking his hands when his opponent went down to the mat.
When he pulled him back down, he was on one knee and then he had his hands locked.
Yeah.
So it's not three.
To two, a technical violation.
So locking hands.
And here comes less.
Anderson, over to talk about this lesson here, was it?
Yes.
Yes, yes.
He's down.
No complaint there.
It was just.
How did he do it?
I just want to know if that's what it was for.
So there was a penalty for a foul for stalling.
Another penalty for locking hands makes it 3 to 2.
And now you, guys, got to repeat, this is what the referee is counting for.
As long as you're trying to improve.
C'est la course.
He's trying to use that as his means of escaping than escaping on his own.
Rate of two.
Well, so far, the matches that we've seen, the guys have some problem targets.
It's been on there on the bottom.
When they get down, they have a little bit of trouble being able to secure the escaping maneuver.
I'll tell you, you haven't heard this in a while, but an Iowa team, the last takedown they had was a £134.
Randall got it in the first period.
One good on this score.
Now it's three three after the escape.
It's all tied up, and Ewing has riding time with less than a minute to go.
But Kessler has to score now.
That's his low level attack right there.
For the first time, Kessler has made a low level attack.
He's been here for much of the night.
There's a low level penetrating that He was a standout at the takedown for Marty Kessler, and he's brought Iowa back to 5 to 3.
And he hits the high cross where he's trying to turn out away from the left because the knees are still in.
He still has control because one man can be out as long as the supporting parts of.
The other man are inbounds.
So he scores that two point takedown.
5 to 3.
The Cyclones lead in the meet 10 to 8 on.
The left side, six and a half minutes for that one low level attack that Kessler made took him six half minutes to make it.
I'm sure that the coach is going to look at the same videotape we are and ask him if there is a reason.
Why doesn't he have that kind of talent.
They would anticipate that he'd get something going on the offense earlier than this.
And you had a takedown in the first period.
Those are the rankings right now.
Iowa at the top.
They put 35 points difference between themselves and the number two team.
Certainly did a big job there last week.
Yeah, it's it's tough for a team to get sky high this week because the Nationals the tournament start next week they want to pick two so.
They were more than sky high last year freshmen all year that that the Iowa State match was up.
They said that Kessler locked his hands but his hands like that, as long as those hips not on the match.
Kamaka.
We have 19 seconds to go.
So good.
Stand up.
By the three.
Himself.
Stand up switches, 13 seconds to go, a two point lead the writing time as gone.
A two point lead.
For Kessler.
Mountains Boy picks the.
Ankle to stop it And hey, hey let's rough night.
Let's go.
Hey, Erickson, I'm done listening.
I don't have to listen to what he's saying.
Oh, here we go.
That's wrestling.
Listen to this note.
I know what you want.
And you know what?
I want this the last night.
Here.
This is your warning.
I'm not going to put up with it all night long.
Let's go.
Mike.
Excellent.
I have to talk to Dan Gable.
I just told him that.
That's his warning.
They know it.
That's his warning for them.
That's his warning.
You hear Gable saying, That's his warning.
I'm down wrestling coach.
All right.
That's the official warning against the Iowa State coaches.
Every coach got one official warning and then they get a ten point deducted if they do it the second time.
So when you question judgment, you get a warning.
And they get most of the referees in to listen to yourself and not other 5 to 3 is the start favor of Kessler.
Ewing is back to his feet wisely.
Five foot four wants to free himself so he got out for one night, Can't score up there around the head and buzzer tackle in this one who came right to the wire.
And Marty Kessler got all his points in the last period and big debuting of Iowa State 5 to 4 And so the.
Hawks got back on top again after £158.
It's 11 to 10, very hard fought all the way.
That's how you start it fast.
And Kessler got up in the last period.
Now we go to 167.
It's literally Kessler against Mike Banner style of Iowa State and Lilly Crystal has to stop.
He did.
And this is what they did last week.
A whole team for it was everybody started fast, Do the right thing.
And boy, is he crank it up and faster and they can have that arm as long as he goes across the back.
He can't come up across the shoulder.
As long as he goes perpendicular Now he's got double figure shoulders posted on the bottom.
So now he can take him over back points.
Harvick scored two point near fall.
Makes it for him nothing four, two, one.
On the escape.
And here comes Kessler again.
And here's Dallas wants to get his head together here and come because obviously Lilly Kessler said it's time to turn this thing around.
So he started aggressive now and our still got it.
Just a couple of offensive shots started there.
Needs to keep that up.
Kessler was just overwhelmed in here early.
For two one as the score.
Is overwhelming with with power and aggression, it's one of those things where it may not be just the technique, but just been very aggressive.
And Mike Van Armadale is a sophomore from West Waterloo.
Lilly Kessler is a senior.
He comes from Riverside, California, Notre Dame High School, as his brother Marty does, at least Right.
Number two, he finished second last year in the NCAA.
All right.
Still, I.
Think he has a bloody nose and he just wants to know if he wants to go and stick something in it, stop the blood from coming.
Up bloody nose.
11 to 10 is the score.
Iowa over Iowa State, I understand.
I want to usually do.
Iowa over Iowa State.
And it's a comeback.
You heard Coach Nichols right there.
We all heard him say.
Don't let him crack my kids arms up.
He said we got to use him next week.
And the referee responded, I said, I want you to use it next week to, oh, it's kind of a bit of a push and shove here now.
Yeah.
See, this is what throws people off.
They get in this push and shove up above and then all of a sudden the man just penetrates low and.
And you're used to him coming up here to meet you and then all of a sudden he's down on your knees and it breaks us offensive.
And our staff just really got time.
Double leg takedown for three now.
And he did the same thing.
We were just talking about the kid.
So he he made the low level attack and he has the legs in on him.
We can get him to his.
Back because if he doesn't watch it, he's got that arm tied up.
There's Rico Chip Morelli.
He'll be up at 170 socially.
It's getting interesting.
My friend just hit that low double and that left.
Look at the good left on that he penetrated it, came on and continued his motion too, and threw and then got left.
Besides, those are the real critical things that make that thing going well.
You've heard me talk about that a lot, penetrating.
But then the left, which is another critical factor, a lot of boys don't do that.
They try to get in and they stop so they don't get the lift out of it or they don't change the angle and turn on the man.
And as a result, the man can put his career in.
Order for Kessler over man.
Arms down.
We have 30 seconds to go.
In the first period, it's Iowa City.
You're watching live, Carver, Hawkeye Arena, Iowa, Going for a perfect season, if I can do it.
Perfect girls.
They won 17 without a loss or a tie.
And the Cyclones were giving up a tough go tonight, Rick.
Giving them fits, that's for sure.
I've been asked.
I was just a little high.
But as long as you can control those hips.
All right.
They did a good job of that left.
I hope she got to the side now.
But legs and again.
Neither one of these men were in the first man meet.
By the way, Solomon Carr was.
Hit by Rice after the first half.
Now is hard.
He's going to make the reverse.
Kessler, Barlow.
Kessler The aggressiveness that Dan Gable like.
Turned an escape into a reversal.
That's right.
You just dumps him right over the top by dropping his upper body down.
Now, if he can find that head with a free arm seam, find the head.
Once he finds the head, then he can pull him on over.
And now watch him just stay right on with it.
Just keeps on his feet.
Instead of getting one, he gets two.
Let's go 6 to 3.
And our style is set up.
Now you he's a sophomore.
Kessler is a senior one.
We didn't move real fast on the whistle, Aaron and Kessler is trying to put pressure toward the head.
And he does that.
You know, he's got to be able to throw us now than ourselves.
Really pretty good on the bottom, keeping his arms free as long as he is.
He does a real nice job of keep air score.
Kessler has to take him to the mat here.
He gets a warning against Kessler.
He didn't bring it down.
His response at all.
Not much time there either.
Got to go right after that.
Let's go.
Set now.
We're ready.
Kessler comes on top, leading by three cuts off the switch.
Well, he did a nice job of trying to kick the switch but didn't free his hips.
Miss Kessler reached in, just grabbed that other hill.
Swish again.
Let's get ourselves good at this if you can keep the arms free.
He's very dangerous.
He went both ways.
He went to the left that time.
Couldn't do it.
I was on the edge of the ball, people.
You hear him boo that because he's going up.
There really isn't.
Any other place to go.
There's another Kessler, Harlan Russell here.
A few years ago.
And part of the big crowd and Carver Hawkeye Arena, that Armidale goes back to the referee's position.
He's on the bottom, so he'll start the.
Third period on.
Top.
We're about 17 seconds away from that one time.
He doesn't move off that whistle.
Well, and what he's trying to do is just maintain his space.
Now, Kessler is going to move up.
The eagle gets off to stalling again, and once he gets off the ankle and then asking if he keeps his arm free, starts to become fairly effective.
We're getting close to a minute of writing time for Kessler, who has now gone out to the side.
He can get out here now.
This is 43 Bowers all the way through.
He got the arm and blocked the head and he just scored the hours deal on the bottom for stalling.
So are even in warnings in time at that hour, stay off the flames again.
About an injury this.
Arm, they're not accustomed to a lot of injury time now.
You can hear the response to that.
That's Harold Nichols on the center.
Bob Gasp, what is coming next?
At 177, the last time he met Rico Chip Reilly, he lost by ten points.
I mean, the way it's going tonight, that could be a draw, huh?
Yeah, that's the way they turned around so far.
You like young man Douglas Grove and Rico, Baltimore, Maryland.
They're both sophomores.
Rico Chip really had a redshirt year last year that our stales ready.
Kessler's winning by three.
Iowa is winning in the meet the 11 to 10, just like the old days here.
So, yes, it's worth watching.
I hope you're enjoying it on Iowa Public Television live Now.
Here's where Kessler got caught for stalling last time because he didn't make an attempt to put his man down to the mark that time.
He did it the way you're supposed to pick the way up.
The Iowa State cheerleaders and Iowa's herky down at the other end.
He's he's consorting with the enemy there, I think.
But if you're going to get smart with the enemy, that's the part of the enemy that's to start with.
If they're pretty enough that you'd love to.
Here comes Kessler on top again.
He's up by three.
He's he's written about Hartsdale very well.
He has riding time now.
All he's trying to do now, once he takes away an arm, he goes up and takes away the hip.
And as long as he stays out here, you know, he can be fairly effective, but he'll let down ours.
Go get those arms free.
He's going to be tough against them.
At some point.
Against Van are still in the bottom.
So it's now 7 to 3.
Kessler Well, he should stay.
A lot of pressure on him now, almost double.
Quickness.
In the end of the period, 7 to 3.
Kessler had a good, good run that time he got a reversal for two and a penalty for one.
That's physically taxing to wrestle that hard down.
2 minutes to.
Go interest and see how they respond to the exertion that they've used.
Wednesdays starts on top sophomore from west Waterloo Stan Gables old high school.
They've a bunch of them come out of that school.
I haven't over the years that didn't work well at all.
Just try to create a it and he just didn't have the control of it.
9 to 3 now Kessler gets two for the.
Reversal, his second one.
And Kessler has the arm bard up pretty well.
He has it tied up.
He just doesn't have a very good angle.
He can't put that up toward the neck and drive.
He has to drive it perpendicular to the body.
This is a real tough spot to be in on the bottom.
If the man on top continues to drop toward the head.
Then he can tie you all up and you can't get back up.
He's going to be braces, takes a lot of flexibility.
And it also makes it very difficult to shampoo your hair after the meet over.
Anybody but you and I.
They don't have the hair to shampoo.
So there it is.
Oh.
That's too.
Oh.
Hey, that's a funny combination.
If you're going to stop.
It because you're hurt and it's too hey, I don't care.
That's not my fault.
The referee.
Hey.
You heard him describe that?
No.
Let's listen to a cut, because that is what you call that is potential back points.
And when he's trying to tell me he's hurt when it's a little hole and that's to our side.
But yeah, that's one key point.
That's one team point.
Here's the first loss of decline we've seen this year and we've been lost one point.
See those legs walking across?
And that's Coach Nichols going.
Over to talk to Coach Gable.
That makes it 12 to 10.
And that's a loss of ten point I made at 12, ten, 11, nine.
Of course, as you all all know, and we're trying to tell us telepathically.
He penalized Kessler for not attempting to take his opponent back to the mat right there.
There's a nice standing switch by Van Hartsdale.
Just this control on the hips, 11 to 4.
It's 11 to 4 right now.
He's man hours deal has to.
Make up a lot of points in about 40 seconds.
Nice job of kicking that out right there.
Penalty point for man hours deal and now an escape makes it 11 to 5.
A lot of things happening tonight here.
Well, what Well, of course, Nichols is objecting to so much was the fact that Kessler had on what he what the referee determined to be a pinning combination.
And anytime you have a penny combination and the other opponent declares an injury in an attempt to break the pin combination, the rules say you give to whether you're on your back.
Right.
You get two points because you don't.
Use an injury to get out of a pinning combination.
I've got to find out, is There is riding time.
Plenty of it.
Plenty of it.
And it's a 12 to 5 score level.
And Kessler picks up three points for.
The two actually got four.
Because of the loss of two points and that makes it 14 to 9 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
After 167.
Hawks are up by five.
Now we've got a 177.
Record temporarily for the Hawks against Bob Gasman of the Cyclones.
And Gasman got the first two.
I got that nice high crotch.
We saw him do that a couple of times last time and and temporarily just dumped him right over with the movie.
Just tried to use this time gassed and hung on to it.
Got to take that.
2 to 1 after the escape.
This will be wide open, I'm.
Sure, because Gassman will come in.
Chip Morelli will.
Probably let it go and then try to counter him out of.
I have a suspicion too.
If I were to go back and look at this that Dan Gable probably pitched it to.
Look at how many times Iowa State got the first takedown this summer.
He's got other things on his mind right now.
I guess one likes to draw from the open.
There's this high crotch again.
Now, this is where Chip Borelli found Oh, he let him in and then he kind of get at the football.
Right?
Of who in favor of Rico?
Chip Perella.
Who's a very good Kreidler on top.
And you see him working for the cradle right here.
And he's got the crossface.
If he can get the crossface and get the man posted on the shoulder post, it means stuck down on that shoulder and they can use it.
I've got to say, six times in the first period, Iowa State has had the first takedown that I.
Talked about like that.
14 and nine.
The Hawks generally leads three out of two here.
They each had a takedown and Chip really got away.
One.
Let's go on.
He'll do that a couple of times as an official, once, twice.
And then do you make a determination which man isn't working to try to improve the position and put a warning for stalling on the other one.
Set up for a 177 lay of two to go Duane Goldman against Hierapolis and Steve Wilbur against Darrell Peterson and.
Gasol.
Nice job of trying to get to his feet there and controlling him.
Tim Early just did a great job of shift and Sage took his hips across and you know Doug what you lose your base in this sport you're just a lot of trouble.
To really trying to cradle.
He gives things up and then he has a great finish.
His average is slightly lower this year than has been in the past year.
Out of 17.
Wins, only 510.
That's up to 94 batting average.
And last year at 18 out of 25, which is a 72% score.
Probably catching on to him a little bit.
And I'm sure the coaches are trying to get him to be a little more under control.
You know, don't waste so much emotion and or yourself trying to get the ball, but win more matches and be an all-American, maybe a national champion.
Straight up to score chip early with about 45 seconds to go in the first period.
If you.
Know you're down, say.
And neither man really is moving fast off that whistle.
But once they get sick here, now here's the process.
He's got the person who's got that shoulder down on the man.
Now, it's a matter of big music to come over Herman Gasol on.
Avoid it.
This is the last duel meet for Harold Nichols, the coach at Iowa State, playing at his team has done very well here against Iowa.
There's a warning on the bottom against Gassman.
He continues to come up over the top and work on the far side of the Crossface, which kept him down fairly well without really trying to the score.
That's more Gassman problem on the bottom.
That's why you got.
One four strong.
Steve Wilbur Hey, we got a heavyweight for Iowa.
He lost to Darrell Petersen in their first match of the day.
Nice to see Rico's last takedown here.
Chuck may just sweep the leg, come all the way through and out.
When he comes down on top of him, he has that the up.
And there there were two points.
Gassman starts on top.
He's not much of a writer.
I tell you.
Like two dozen.
One breaking down or two.
I'll temporally back on the feet again.
They've traded takedowns.
Jeff really got the last one.
Chip really likes to throw.
He likes to get into these kinds of positions.
Gassman can use this offensive lane himself, but he tends to be more of a low level wrestler.
Like come in on the high crotch in the singles chip early tends to counter out of those fairly well.
That's the team score 14 nine after £167 after seven matches, Iowa has won the last two and they hadn't won one before that since Gary Davis and a high cross again, but switched off to a double headed off to the double.
This is where it may be effective to terrorize.
Just try to lock runners like this up to the whizzer now who held it out of the elevator that he.
Missed his leg so well and then he's.
Got away with the fortitude, beautifully done on both sides.
Kind of letting Gaston come in on that.
There he does.
The second here comes into the double in front, good control to tie up a takedown and a double.
Leg by Chip Morelli, who's had the last two takedowns.
And he generated that offense on his own by being able to work the head against his opponent.
Three Gassman try to keep him from cross facing up, got to posting the shoulder by pulling his arm away.
He said He's going to try to get to Sweden Now there's the side left, one he's got to be able to now get out to the side to use that three more for us to see who is counting.
I guess in here.
The Iowa State coach was yelling, he's just right in a parallel.
Right.
You were running against Jeff Pirelli.
So there are even warnings.
They've each been.
Cautioned.
They send it to the crowd at the tip relay.
All you're doing is right, right in behind him and stay in parallel.
So you got one for stalling.
So now Jim Bradley on top leads by four takes Gasol for the out again but Bob up right up against a running one two they wanted to switch but that got shot off in a hurry and for the second period a four point lead for Chip O'Reilly Dan Gable attendance 10,115 10,115 here at Carver Hawkeye Arena was just announced Phil had a set.
That's a nice he just had cut the head earlier.
Now look how it penetrates out all the way, all the way in.
It goes all the way around the circle.
Now we're back at live action against Gassman.
Got to his feet immediately as the second period started.
Chip Roll is willing to ride a little while.
He has while he has up.
He has a bundle of riding time.
241 and a four point lead.
I was going to say, if you're going to ride today and that's all you're going to do, you're going to have to win the Academy Award because I'm not going to get away with it unless you're a great actor, Larry, Just let it go on purpose.
Six three After the escape for Gassman.
First point for Bob The Cyclones since the opening seconds of the match when he took Chip early down with a high crotch move.
Now this is where Gassman likes to stay open and hit the high crotch coming in and he does have a good single.
It comes out to his right, but he doesn't do it from this position much.
This is where Chip really would rather be.
On the edge of the mat now right before referee Mike.
Excellent.
And he sends it back to the center.
Mark Johnson on, the left key for him on the right, the Iowa system live Iowa against Iowa State, 14 to 9 hawks that just started.
Little bit too far away.
That's a penalty against Gasol 7 to 3.
The Iowa State bench was first given an official warning and then had a point taken away.
So they're rather calm on that one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
They aren't doing much planning and really care what happens.
The second that you can call Gassman into.
The high cross this, it doesn't improve that very much.
He gets it.
And then doesn't improve it.
As a result.
Chip really could pull his hip on up for the taking Tech takedown for Chip Rally.
That's his third.
Time.
The three, the score.
He gets there, like you want an athlete to get there but then doesn't finish it.
Gets beaten just picking up.
Gasol.
Yes I am 9 to 4 gets there so well oh, there is that little.
Maneuver that they see.
There's the one.
That Chip really did the first time.
Just block the head, come across.
Now guess what?
If he can take it down.
And say, I can score two.
That's called leave it up.
No score there, 9 to 4 with 13 seconds to go.
So every now and then they'll just reach across with one hand, cuff your head.
And a takedown.
For another counter, 11 to 4 with writing time after.
The escape at the right at the very end.
It's a seven point victory for Rico temporally.
So he wins twice against Gassman in the two meetings this year.
Me And it adds three more points to the Hawkeye total 17 to 9.
Now the Hawks lead.
They travel to the intermission and eight they've come back.
Well, matter of fact, I obviously have lost ten points at intermission.
They are right now because.
The point taken away, in case you're wondering how it happened, 17 to 9 Ceccarelli brings his team up with a 12 five win.
Duane Goldman now at 190, Russell's John Harrell is Hierapolis of Iowa State.
On the left, Goldman number one, ranked one in 22 out of 23 this year at £180 for Iowa Black.
Goldman is one of those guys that's very busy on tie ups.
You know, he doesn't tend to get in to tie up very much.
And when he does, he will continue to be busy.
What he likes to do is just work on the hips, touch the shoulders, cuff the head, then go.
That's where he does his best work, is being in that open position.
The first time they met, Goldman won 9 to 4.
It's an eight point lead for the Hawks.
Well.
I was impressed with how Garoppolo stayed in that magic role for the first time and did a nice job there.
The crowd clapping and clapping along with the man who was first picked out of the match goes to Goldman, gets him a little extended, drops him down.
It's a snap down.
Well, a.
Lot of these takedowns were not so impressive that they couldn't be done by anybody as long as a young guy will realize how they're done and then try to execute it himself.
At the end of this match tonight, we're going to got to talk to Harold Nichols and get him calmed down a little bit, Chuck, and talk about that great career of his was just the dual career which is ending tonight last dual meet of his 37 year coaching career.
And also we'll look back on some of the highlights of this season.
I hope you will stick around after the meet is over.
We'll show you some of the few of the big throws of the some interesting things that happened in a very short three minute package.
Out comes Hierapolis.
It's 2 to 1.
Goldman Sachs.
Finds.
I'll talk to him.
Doug.
I'm not sure I can get him.
Calm down.
Here.
Nick is a competitor.
Here is Goldman in?
He's just kind of reaching through the underhook.
This is a place Goldman Rather be right out there.
He'd rather just cup on the head.
Papa shoulder, then start to.
Work.
And kind of slides down to the side there.
He comes back into the deli, so he's busy in the in the tie up instead of being in a position where he just hangs out and he's busy and controls it, gets him into the leg.
Now he's no control, but look how patient he is right here.
But he got it yes, he did, because his knees are and it's a takedown for what was the knees And it's okay.
Bend down.
4 to 1 in favor of Goldman.
Now watching this started to pump the leg down as Hierapolis goes out, he just dives and stays in there.
You can see this entire body is almost out except for those knees.
Iowa public television's ninth consecutive season of college wrestling concluding with Iowa and Iowa State live tonight.
Again, a little while, we'll get to that address what it's like to write comments about the college wrestling series.
One who Goldman leads for too long and he's close to having a minutes right at time.
And go crapola off his face.
Now, John Harrop from Ohio State has built back up.
Well, now it's a matter now of control and hands to be able to get back pressure, finish it, get to his feet.
But it's too late in the pool.
3 minutes are gone for the one goal, Acropolis, Detroit, going down.
Oh, couldn't quite decipher that.
Could do, but some of them sure did.
The person that was that far, John Acropolis, is from Canton, Ohio, and he wrestled two years at Slippery Rock.
They won the Eastern regionals and went to the NCAA at ten to the Division one schools, Iowa State.
He's awfully hard.
He has a leg heavy.
But he is just a little high and he's just kind of cuddling now for probably trying to get a stalemate, get up that high.
You don't want it.
You're hoping you can get it.
Still made it.
All the way.
I'm going to take down to the first period, I believe, 17 nine Hagelin and Kelly drew at 118 Gassy and Randall Drew at 134.
Davis beats a major decision at 126.
You see, it gets to his feet, he gets to his feet and he has to hand control of both hands, and that pulls his hips on out of the corner.
Try to score.
That a skate he does still has 45 seconds to right in time.
Goldman will try not to let a reckless out of here without coming back on him somehow, you know, even though he's locked up, he probably tried to maneuver him some place.
If he can't get another takedown in, pull him down later in a match when Goldman becomes very deadly with what he likes to do best, and that is break free, just pop it right on three on the shot timeout.
Just Goldman is having trouble with his headgear.
Comfortable with it.
Things don't bother this young guy.
At 142 tonight, Joe Gibbons beat Kevin Dresser 642.
Iowa State man Jackson won his second dual victory against Jim Heffernan of Iowa tonight.
It's 157 to 5 and Iowa State led them to has been Iowa since Kessler's one.
Marty Kessler 5 to 4 over you in Little League.
Kessler 12 to 5 over man hours deal.
That's generally 12 to 5 over.
Gastelum Here we are at 190.
Both men are more.
Okay, yeah.
Here's here's one of those runs where he comes right back on the double.
Oh, it doesn't go on through it, but it bothers you.
It's in that position.
Okay.
To break out, come back to do another.
And here Apple has got out of that by just giving Dwyane a pop on the start off.
To give him a slap in the.
And pretty hard to get an offensive move against Goldman when he's coming at you as he does he.
Stays right in there and then five.
To one and another period is gone.
This one has moved past the almost no time out at all.
This time, Hierapolis goes down as his choice in the second period.
He started up and didn't stay there long.
45 seconds of writing time for Goldman as he begins this third period.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Taps.
The first one comes up over time.
No, What he's trying to do is take that leg out his leg and pull the other leg up, pressure up over top.
He's just going to let go.
I think.
Lets him work his way out.
I just given it to his back.
HAMMER But the intent was there.
And getting him back into a position that he wants to be set up.
It's five two and I'll go.
Remember, we have Peterson against Wilber.
Next, we'll talk to Carl Nichols of Iowa State.
His team wrestled so well in the first time in this part of this meet, that that's a point for Goldman.
Dropping, which is why I strongly said that it's.
Not very pretty, but it's very effective.
And he's going to just try to spin around.
To get one arm free, that he can just continue to spin on his opponent.
Like, excellent.
Feels this going anywhere.
He calls him off 6 to 2.
John Hierapolis of Ohio State.
Knows there Hierapolis had Goldman's head down and out of position.
Just didn't take advantage of the.
Four point lead for Goldman.
The eight point lead for the hot tub against the psycho carbon hockey arena.
Hierapolis has to get going here, so let Goldman.
Do the things he's got to have the offense Goldman vocal coach to be around, and he does for the takedown.
It's the first takedown they've had since the first period.
By the way.
It's not the prettiest thing, but it's just very effective as he continues to get the man down and out of position.
And that's been around the other.
8 to 3 after the escape, you see very little time is left.
This match wrestled almost in real time.
You know, it's 7 minutes long and it's just about as long as it's taken.
They haven't been out of bounds much at all.
It's over.
Writing time.
Yes.
You have another point to Goldman.
It's nine the three for the hall, and that does put the.
Heat out of reach.
But they had to go to £190 just to clinch it.
This time.
Cyclones hung in there until 190.
Goldman wins 9 to 3 at the scoreboard Now.
Norwich, Iowa, 20, Iowa State, nine Before we go to heavyweight.
Darrell Petersen of Iowa State, £350 against Steve Wilber of Iowa, who has probably about 245 to 50, something like that.
Petersen won the first match between these two and the dual meter names.
You can see the difference in something like that over them trying to grab a hold of him.
And Petersen just kind of flips him away with an arm that's sort of like swatting a fly away heavyweight match.
Now, Wilbur's very good when he gets in like this, being able to foot sweep his opponent and the size really isn't as important then as balance.
So he likes to just get into those hook positions and then sweep.
Anderson's made two grabs for flag.
Pickups, but with Mike, remember, the tournament starts next week, the big race and the Big Ten championships.
And we'll have Iowa High School State Championship.
Right here live starting at 630 a week from tonight.
Saturday Night Veterans Auditorium, Illinois.
A lot of these wrestlers, these two teams started out by winning big tournaments at the Iowa championships.
A lot of the boys from both teams have been state championships for sure, some of them two or three times, couple of.
Four double for Randall and Gibbons.
No score here in the first period.
The matches at Heavyweight ten, so many times that comes down to just kind of strategy sessions.
You know, if you don't get take it down, you're a little bit smaller then kind of put the man down and maybe turn him over or at least keep him from getting out and then can you get out.
So you kind of put it into a write in time or who's going to be able to hold on to the other guy.
But there's a good sweep on rovers.
Partly it's kind of Bulldog and down.
It just doesn't have the other arm, that other arm are still free to go hard with.
It might have had a better chance to get it.
Wilburn gets a cheer from the Iowa crowd for that.
Yeah, I don't think Paterson wants to let Wilbur get that arm up around the head like that.
Yeah, I like that.
Puts you in kind of a vulnerable position.
For one thing, it messes up your head gear just as it did there.
He had to go over to the side of the mat to retrieve it.
We're back again.
Get in.
A Wilbur's trying to is intentionally trying to dig under those arms.
And you think that Peterson now is going to have to work a different kind of strategy to get.
The ball bottom?
Oh, here's a double warning.
He's got under.
Both arms again.
Now he's really Peterson is kind of vulnerable with whatever hits.
It just isn't what.
We told about that address.
Erotic, but college wrestling coverage, you'll take your time to let us know your thoughts about what we've been doing this year.
And we'll show you that address here in this heavyweight match with Steve Wilbur and Beryl Peterson.
With only 10 seconds left to go in the first curry, there's been no score.
Each man has been one for stalling.
Well, Peterson, if he wants to win the strategy match on his feet, will be able create.
More pressure here.
That is the end of the first three minute period.
But there are two minute periods now here in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
There's the address, college wrestling Care of Iowa Public Television Post Office Box 1758.
That's 1758 to win Iowa.
50306 5306.
Tell us what you think.
Peterson starts.
On time.
It was rumors, choice, rumor, decided to take down.
Peterson doesn't want to let it get his feet up here.
Want to pick away from knocking down the office space Now this it's a good look at that.
Get up out of that way.
And Rover takes the lead one to nothing.
Remember, after this match is over, we'll talk to Harold Nichols, show you highlights of the season before we get away.
And Peterson won the first match between these two men at.
Ames, but Wilbur is up here by a point.
Now.
Oh, I'm sure the coaches from Iowa State don't want Peterson to get this position right here.
Elbows out, away from the side, locked up.
They don't want him here.
And there goes the headgear again.
I keep telling you, chuckles the dangerous part of that position.
And this right now.
But if you get just just the right kind of momentum on it, it can be dangerous for four points as well.
They call he was a three time national champion at Iowa State.
They're doing a little show and tell for Darrell Peterson what.
They want him to do they.
Want him to snap his opponent down.
They want him to pop the head and get his legs back out of the way and snap him down, not just hang on when you grab the head.
It's not there to hey, it's there to be used.
And if you remember Gary Davis, that's how effectively he used to hit.
That's what they want their heavyweight to do.
You don't hear pop, cuff it to turn it sideways.
Wilber has control of the match.
He's he's doing what he wants to do and he leads one to nothing, gets him under the arms, and then Peterson's elbows away.
You see how those elbows are out?
This this can be a real dangerous position for him.
The size is in favor of Peterson, but the position is a favorable upper.
And here it comes again.
We have a half a minute to go in the second period off again.
There's a point for stalling here, and it's two to nothing now in favor of Wilber.
The matches little by little getting away.
From the big Iowa state in any way.
Let his letting that Wilber maintain the position drop.
Now see this time he has his elbows.
Down hand over guitar time.
You don't want to let the double slap the outside two time.
I think it's a start.
2 minutes to go.
Peterson On the bottom.
Wilber on time.
He got both of these points in the second period.
Peterson has been ranked this year.
And he doesn't want to lose one more time.
The right up to that ankle.
Just let him let him get knocked out.
Now he's got to build back up here.
A lot of heavyweights do what they call a tripod stand up.
To get up to straighten out their legs and raise their hips up first.
And Wilbur's trying to take that away by just pick the ankle up to.
Knock it down.
And Wilbur has controlled this match exceedingly from the start.
There was no score in the first period.
Wilbur escaped at the beginning of the second, got a penalty.
Then, when Peterson was penalized for stalling.
Serotype, Peterson builds up over picks on equipment, pushes him on back down.
We have about a minute and 15 to go.
The has told the.
Man from Iowa, move out, don't just stand behind him.
Another point or even if it now he gets to his feet looks a little bit off right back down.
And Wilbur continues to control the £350 heavyweight from Iowa State, Mario Peterson.
Three to nothing.
And we're in the last 45 seconds.
I think he's going to win the man from Iowa, this time for Stand Parallel.
Well, it's a penalty it's first point for Peterson.
And it's a 3 to 1 because there was a warning earlier.
But he has ridden in long enough now to effectively get right in time.
So he scores a four.
To one now.
Right in time.
Right.
He has a minute and one second.
A technical take away That standout knocks the big man down.
He's got to build back up and then start to get his.
Back pressure it.
I don't think the referee will let him stay on that ankle forever.
Oh.
He uses it long enough to knock Peterson down and that time goes by.
20 seconds to go in the final.
There's a two point penalty against Peterson.
Just about doesn't 5 to 1.
And this is the final goal he in between Carol Nicolson and the rest of the world after 37 years.
We're going to talk more as he defeated Darrell Peterson with riding time by a score of 6 to 1, a621 victory for Steve Wilbur.
A reversal of their effort the last time.
And Darrell Peterson disappointed heavyweight Harold Nichols talking to Keith Mahler.
It's the final dual meet of his career.
The team score here, 23 four at nine four Iowa State.
Now, stick around.
We're going to talk with keep our eye on Harold Nichols there.
He's going to be coming back to talk with Chuck Patterson in just a moment.
And then we're going to show you some highlights of the season before we got away to a short little feature.
Iowa State scored the same number of points as last time.
They actually scored ten, but they had one point taken away and it was ten day at the intermission.
There's Dan Gable talking now to Les Anderson, Iowa state assistant coach.
We have an undefeated and untied season for the Hawks.
They are perfect at the end of the dual season.
They now go into a tournament schedule next week which they hope will lead to their eighth straight national championship.
And now here's Chuck Patton talking with Harold Nichols.
Yeah, I'm here with Coach Nichols.
We're want to talk just a little bit about his career, not necessarily about the meet tonight.
But, Nick, I do want to compliment you.
In those first four or five weeks, those guys were really going after and did a heck of a job.
But just tell us a little bit about your maybe strongest memories, the feelings that you have now that you're going to hang it up here as a coach after the dual season.
Oh, I it's hard to say.
There's been so many over the years and I've hesitated to try to pick out one in the whole group.
And by time might forget some others.
So I'd rather not answer that directly.
I'm sure it probably isn't in the form of national championships.
A lot of the coaches get done, but it's probably in form of some of the things that that kids did after they got done coaching a lot of times, isn't it?
I think it's that working with kids is a enjoyment, a lot of fun and it's good to see them finish school, get out in the world, get out there, out on their own.
Well, you've certainly had a lot of guys go out and do great things.
Coaching for myself, for Iowa public television, know you're the guy that got a lot of this started for us and made wrestling popular for wrestling all over the United States.
You know, and we work together on the Rules Committee.
We all appreciate it.
And we have a great debt of gratitude to you, Coach Nichols, and we appreciate all you've done for the sport.
Thank you very much.
Thanks a lot.
And best of luck to you.
Same to you.
Well, back now to Doug.
Thank you, Chuck.
Well, we've come to the end of another college wrestling season here on Iowa Public Television.
We hope you've enjoyed our coverage and will remember to be with us around this march, the Festival 85.
Now, we want you to know, too, that we have something else for you.
A little look back at the impressions of season 85.
We share them now with you.
I don't want to take it any more.
I'll just be lucky to double just on to stop this again way cause I want so hard to make it every day.
Oh, and it's hard to say something straight And it's hard to find it hard to time that time back in the state that all the common people feel and feel and not have that sense of all the simple three and a have problems.
And it's hard to take some time and try to wrap it in the time that time move year round and then five days and try to find it in Santa on time.
That time that kind of thing.
You leave doing just that and not my time.
That video, that video piece was produced by Pat Rowan of our staff and we thank him.
Now we're going to say some quick thank you is here.
Before we go any further, I'm going to read this off.
Chuck's about with anybody out from the University of Iowa.
We thank Bob Bell and of course, athletic director Jim White Promotions, George Wein and Phil Halley of the Sports Information, Dell Gursky, who is the facilities manager here at Carver Hawkeye, and Dan Gable, of course, and his staff, Iowa State, Max York.
We had an interview with him and I had Dave assistant, Kirk Hendrix and Dave Starr of Sports Information, Tom Lawrence of Hilton Coliseum and Harold Nichols and his staff at Drake.
It's Bob Carnes, athletic director Dave at Sports Information.
Marty Timmerman, the coach in northern Iowa, Bob Bowles, the athletic director, Nancy Justice, and Michael Madsen, the sports information director, and of course, Brick Seton breaks on his staff.
And once again, the final score here was 23 to 9.
It was a heck of a meet for a while.
Chuck Outstanding meet and.
I hope the fans enjoy.
That was really a dandy there through that hundred and £50 weight class.
And we wish the best to these teams as their tournament start next week.
The Big eight and the ten.
And for us it's going to be the state high school meet the championship in Des Moines Vets Auditorium and Chuck Patton and I are going to be there again having a good time.
We certainly with everybody else.
So that's next Saturday at 630.
We hope you'll plan to join us.
