Oh.
That's about it's college wrestling 15th anniversary this evening from Barbara Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa Public Television sports brings you the rematch between the number three ranked Iowa State cyclones and the number one ranked Iowa Hawkeyes.
Hello, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson back for our final meet of the 15th anniversary season.
And then in two weeks, we'll have another anniversary, our 20th high school state meet from Des Moines.
And at the intermission, we got to have a little fun.
We're going to pick out the winners in our drawing for NCAA tickets.
Well, it's Iowa and Iowa State and the last time we saw Iowa State was against Iowa.
And that's where we found out that Iowa has a very special team.
They won the first seven matches against Iowa State.
Then the Hawkeyes lost the last three, putting a little thought in Dan Gable.
He worries about that ever since.
Now, these two teams have over the years had some awfully good matches, even when one team was ranked much higher than the other.
Well, the Cyclones have had a little tough going lately, though they haven't won in this series since 1987, and they've never won in Carver Hawkeye Arena won out the first time these two teams met.
Iowa won and Iowa State lost.
And you put these two teams together and that's the only loss either team has had all year in 38 matches.
39.
Well, when you think about Iowa State, they're a really pleasant surprise to wrestling this year.
If Iowa's number one dual team in the nation, Iowa State's number two, they have between five and seven possible All-Americans, I believe.
And Iowa last week, we saw them twice and I think they proved what a terrific team they can be.
I think it's one of the best teams Dan Gable's ever had up and down the line.
Ten possible All-Americans, I believe.
But I think you'll still see Dan Gable bitterness and Ales tonight because he's still not convinced they're as good as he wants them to be.
You know, at £118, they always start out fast.
That's the big cliche, almost what we say.
And they have two fast starters on these teams.
Iowa State's man is Eric Aiken.
He has started out fast for the Cyclones.
He's a three time state champion out of Kansas.
He's a real go getter and he has a lot of talent.
But at 118 for Iowa, it was Chad's capital.
And last time he started a little quicker than Aiken.
He's explosive pound for pound, maybe the strongest man on the on the team.
He really has an aggressive counter style.
He's one of the fastest improving 18 pounders in the nation.
Hey, here's a surprise for you.
If you're an Iowa state watcher, Steve Hamilton is going to be in the middle tonight, but he is going to be at £150.
I've seen it in his eyes since he was a freshman.
He wants to be a national titlist.
He's an all-American at 158 as a freshman and sophomore.
But he feels 150 is where he has his best shot at the NCAA championship.
Now, Torrie Jackson won't just give up that position.
They're going to have to wrestle that off.
But Jackson will be at 158 tonight.
Let's talk heavyweights for a while.
Iowa State has a heavyweight who's one of the fastest rising pleasant surprises of the year, Todd Kinney.
Well, I think Todd Kinney is he's won some big matches for Iowa State this year.
And when he gets on top, he's really dangerous.
He's a pinner.
And for Iowa, it's John Austin dark won the Dan cable's been a little worried about gets a key weight for Dan Gable on his way to a national title he says he's got to perform for him and John's had an up and down year and it depends on which big show comes out for him tonight.
The date for this match, not the 150 and 58 switch, isn't the only change in the lineup.
We must mention that Iowa State does not have £134 covered tonight.
How can they overcome that?
Well, a lot of teams have come in with the Wrestler at 134 against Tom Brands and half the number overcome it.
They've given up six there.
But I don't think that's the point.
I think there's going to be some exciting individual matches tonight.
But the Hawkeyes have to be favorite.
It's Iowa State and Iowa, the rematch.
Coming up next on Iowa Public Television, And we're back at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City for the big rematch between number three, Iowa State and number one Iowa boy.
We're going to take a look at how these two teams have done in past fairs.
It's an Iowa series so far, 332 and 14.
Iowa won ten in a row forum last year, and two of them in the national dual tournament.
They had four meetings in one season and 1991.
And the matchups today will, as we suggested on the just before the meet in the opening show, some surprises.
One of them is that Iowa State doesn't have anybody weighing in at £134 and Tom Brands will win by a forfeit.
Six points for Iowa right there, 77.
Russ Dad, Sean.
Russ Dad will make the first of the steiners And look at 150.
There's Steve Hamilton down at 150 for the first time at 158.
And a reversal of the two positions.
Corey Jackson.
That doesn't mean it's permanent by any means.
They haven't wrestled off and it hasn't been decided yet.
177 Matt Johnson nursing a sore ankle or Mike Kelly against Barcelos one right there said it on 90 and at heavyweight it's Jamie Cutler or Todd Kelly against Austin Dark it may be Cutler we don't know we'll wait to see what he got up toward the end but here we are at Carver Hawkeye Arena where Iowa has been devastating Tim Johnson in the meetings we've seen him this year and in fact the meetings last week that we broadcast for the coaches of these two teams, Jim Gibbons for Iowa State, his assistants are Speed 90 other Joe Keller, Wes Anderson and Paul Allen.
Dan Gable.
He thinks if they wrestle the way they did for every 15 seconds at the Oklahoma State meet man what a team this would be they fresh off Colorado Springs is the official he was scheduled to officiate the first meet to what they do between Iowa State and Iowa is scheduled.
The same referee for both meets home and home.
And he wasn't able to make it that first one.
Here's how the two teams have done against the top teams.
Iowa State wrestles Oklahoma State a week from today.
They haven't wrestled Ohio State and Iowa hasn't wrestled Nebraska.
That's how they've done in other one at Penn State.
As a matter of fact, I was in Iowa in one of those Iowa weeks.
It was a side of the only fly on the entire Mark II record this year.
Well, which Iowa game in which Iowa State team will show up today?
That's the question.
Well, that is the question, Doug.
And they both come out of crappy websites.
They.
All right, here we go.
At 118, it's Zapatero who gets out very fast for Iowa.
He beat very good badly the first time, even though both men are known as fast starters and have set the tempo for their team success this year.
Chad's capital has won 29 out of 30 matches.
And I would say right off hand, he's a definite contender for the national title.
I see that the biggest show doubters in the nation, but Eric Bacon certainly has an opportunity to get in there and be an all-American to him.
We'll just see how close he is to zapping.
All right.
Now, after getting beat the first time he did, my impression is that even though Eric Aiken has been a fast starter in these tough matches, he hasn't had a tendency to get behind and against the Wisconsin wrestler that he beat badly.
Eventually he had to come from behind to do it.
He got down by two takedowns very early when he wrestled Zap until the first time he couldn't get that, couldn't come back.
Well, I think you made a good point here.
It depends on how well Aiken's able to slow this down in one sense and not go get off to a big start.
Referee Dave Frisch lets us know right away that he is not going to let people cruise at all.
He has already door for inactivity.
A warning next time.
A point for some good dawg.
We've talked about it before and there it is.
A good defense, but Eric Aiken needs to take advantage of that.
Get back in.
But capital works the head so much and he takes everything off.
Either work in the head or counter shots make shots.
There's a defense right there and getting out.
Referee Dave Fresh has wrestled.
You'll see the NCAA patch on his shirt.
He's refereed NCAA tournaments as a well known official around the sport of wrestling in the conference.
Here he is in Iowa City State.
And the heart there is a nice little hi like picked up by zapping all his power.
Didn't get him the point though.
Okay you can fight off only so long though.
And so that was a nice shot.
Every bit of work so far is being made by Chad's capital from Iowa.
Eric Aiken has not made any moves yet.
He's been nothing but good ordering, though, going back to the middle again.
How much time?
What are you are you just more than 3 minutes out of the three in the first period?
I know I'm right.
You know, what I see here is the key to Eric Aiken is if he can keep it close after the first period and get on top and do some damage from the top position, which he which he has the ability to do.
That's the key to a win for Eric Aiken.
But he has not made a serious move yet.
Zap, it'll still time ahead.
There is the shot by zap by Aiken, which will probably keep it from being called for.
And he's stalling exactly right now.
He needed that shot in there so far as a strategy to keep it close and then not let Zap will get on a wall.
20 seconds to go in the first period.
Hey, thank God, very close to the edge.
This is definitely a different match than it has been in the past, is Capital has won two matches the first time, tend to fire the second time in the Iowa State duel by big or small, there's a scoreless first period, but each man was more, well, this is great, Larry, great job.
As far as the match circumstance, zero zero after the first period.
Great.
First zap is capital defers.
That's going down.
Aiken is going to try to come out from under his capital.
Now, he can now he's got a warning to strong get a warning, get the word zap.
It'll start to ride wrestle at Centreville High School.
Although his hometown is Mystic.
Eric Aiken comes from Overland Park, Kansas.
Think he could counter on the counter there, abide by capital to keep Aiken from coming out.
It is almost out There are several as you do a pretty good basic rider but he does like to be on his feet right here and so now they're back with Aiken having one zero with that escape.
And again, they both have the little sign hanging over their heads.
They have then warned each man and I have a suspicion that the way to get it on right.
Look, the door, you go out and go in, it's one of five to go in the second period of a scoreless good shot.
Good job reached by not much of a move by John Powers.
And on the left here he is on the edge of the mat.
His best position yet, got him back to go.
That's good shot by Chad Capital.
That was great.
Hip action by Eric Aiken to keep from being taken down through crowd for the first time.
That's good looking a little stir in the crowd.
They haven't had much to yell about so far.
You know, it's interesting.
That was the low point.
That's the point that ties it.
It's a penalty against Aiken for inactivity.
One, one.
Let's go 50 seconds.
Second period.
Let's go.
Well, let's let's go.
What am I, a Aiken has not made a good move.
He'll pick it.
He almost got his back.
It's a 3 to 1 lead for capital.
First take.
That was capital.
Kept the charge up.
He kept going forward.
He kept going forward.
And he got the stalling car.
I think that took just a little zip out.
Aiken was able to shoot in.
Good, get that takedown and now up 3 to 1.
The momentum definitely for Iowa's capital Fresh 27, talking to Eric Aiken as he sends the Iowa State freshman back to the center again to the down position.
This is where Aiken started the period on a big step.
Now he escapes fairly quick order.
Don't forget to work right again with the one now working on some hand control.
And he's great to your feet again.
Hurry with the score.
Well, right here with the Capitals attack right here, Aiken has to keep his feet moving.
He's got to keep moving right here for a couple of reasons to keep from being taken down.
Oh, there's when he came from getting warned for stalling and he was able to dodge that bullet right there.
And it's a 3 to 2 match with Aiken on top.
And I said, I think there's just capital chance.
Father was looking a little more worried that he might get the 3 to 2 score, then he might have the last time capital starts on his feet.
That's his choice.
He feels confident out here.
Well, I think that's exactly right.
And he didn't want to take the chance of getting underneath when he is dominated on the feet.
Grayson hard work on his go.
He can has not intimidated capital yet.
It has given him a real shot on his feet.
He's countered well, a couple of times.
Here comes the the double leg for the nice job.
He hit capital did a nice job of staying quite good continuing to drive forward nice takedown is going to double leg takedown by shallow back with good at the half feet 5 to 2 here All right got to call it that's inside call it what I'm about to take.
I would go.
It was a major decision for Zapp.
It'll go right back up.
Aiken is not out yet.
That is Capital wrestling.
A real smart catch here.
He's a very basic rider face.
Like he's got to fight between the 15 to 6.
The first time these two men met a major decision.
Now Aiken is out, but right time to launch his capital.
He's had 6 to 2.
He's had 5 to 3 with riding time.
And I think it still has to get the takedown can't be to happen overnight.
Take can push zap it'll be a stalling point against Armstrong then you have a takedown on an EVA guy, but he's not able to put too much power.
A lot of time on the pitch, but it's 7 to 3 on his third takedown.
May maybe the pound for pound, the strongest man on the team.
He's really a power pack.
Good.
7 to 3 with 15 seconds to go.
Remember at 126 will be Terry Brandes against bad night coming up next.
I think what we've got to remember, too, is Aiken definitely has a shot at being an all-American.
He's one of the better £18 in the nation right now.
And that's how good capital's become this year is really coming.
Jacob Aiken is only a freshman capital, a sophomore on eligibility.
I don't let him go now to get back on the mat.
And here comes.
Let him out.
Go, go as Capital seven, open three, and it's going to end right here.
The big difference with rising tide, which means victory in Kansas.
Who's watching, Buddy?
And I'll take the lead over Iowa State in the first man and a tough go there.
Harry Aiken, what was for the first time might not have been a great up in the second half of them kept coming after he did get his takedown.
And that was the difference.
And one in the second period, two in the third and one at the three.
Here we go, £26.
Terry Brand Champion, the number one ranked defending national champion, Terry France or Iowa against number four ranked and I'd all-American from Iowa State and contrasting styles here and what needs to be done by Iowa State is to open up Danny night needs to open up if he expects any kind of opportunity because he can throw he's dangerous, he can throw from any Kerry Brands, on the other hand, is a picker and he can just pick apart.
He has so many things that he can do, but he's relentless.
He keeps coming at you.
He's a penetrator and more of a lower body attack.
The first time they met, Terry Webb was a fourth and nothing winner.
It was a close match, but Knight was unable to take him down or get away.
I did from underneath.
Looking good, then looking good.
But he keep the fresh brand.
And now let's go.
Two of the best to come out of Iowa High School.
Dan Knight, a four time high school champion, undefeated in high school, Dan Knight out of Iowa.
Hey, they're both juniors.
That's it.
Iowa leads three to nothing.
After £118, Zapata came on the starters.
And that's what I've been eight for.
Three grabs and the single and still doesn't have it.
Something of a river by David, I presume for Terry to get to work for two to nothing on a single leg checked out by national champion Terry Branch, whose brother Tom will not be seen tonight except when he goes out to have his hand raised.
Have Iowa State forfeits at 134 tonight.
Nobody way to get your hips out right now.
Hips out will come up when these two teams met in Ames, Iowa, won the first seven matches and then lost the last three.
A lot of Iowa's fast starts are right here.
He's in on the single.
And look how Terry Brandes gets his head to the outside, cuts off to a double, comes to his feet, gets good position and now finally at the end of this day and night, sees that he's in too much trouble.
He might give up four or five and he's going to give up two.
And that was because of a good position by Terry Brand.
Rapid action with a better half to go in the first three branches.
He is trying to load up tonight and tell them for bad points when they have been relatively close in the past.
Those tilts make those back points, make all the difference.
You like.
Think the difference between the most rustlers.
They have periods of time where they let up a little bit and they get involved with technique and aren't as tough on top of whatever.
Terry Brands is relentless.
He just is on top.
It's like having a jackhammer on top of you or against you.
The entire match that wears down the back and really tight forearm, nice right arm and preventing the Iowa State wrestler Sean anywhere he's trying to double up.
All right.
Well, Iowa likes to call it one half of the brand in Iowa.
And, you know, that's kind of a corny sounding cliche, but it's it's true because it's just on a high, probably a mark that ever comes.
He went to a night who has a history of shoulder problems.
Right?
Has a tough time.
Three rounds, gets him in a bar, two to nothing Terry Bradshaw over the Iowa State wrestler.
Damn that international start right out here.
Brands not going to let it go up.
He's got to sit out.
All right.
20 seconds to go.
In the first period we're going to get to and get this one very tough on top.
You see warning against night.
See that personal care brands he's putting on?
He's got the arm behind the back.
He's got the pressure on him all the time.
And he's trying to turn it around and get it so that he can get the arm back and.
Yep, a lot of riding.
Tyler, 57 Jericho Branch has two for the takedown and a potential point with that read the first great day of fresh ass three goes down Dan Knight wants to do and he did it Take him away and we'll start again.
We talked about how good the Iowa State wrestler is that's on the short end of the day and night.
Finished third in the nation last year.
This is the third one, 26 year it would be great for the Granite State under 411 seconds there and then came out good in all three to knock it in on that double leg against dynamite.
And it's got to be a tough game.
Nine is really good in that position.
Almost any other wrestler you get an opportunity to hit a headlock there and he's really proficient at that with all three brands kept coming forward with that type of thing here, five to nothing in favor of brand and he's back on the bottom right hand and fresh in your head who has a microphone that wrestlers wants to make sure that the angle on the shoulder doesn't get dangerous.
Yeah.
Oh, with half Nelson and the Iowa Badger seriously running was involved in this takedown, The reason Terry Branstad never really got out of that position here right now.
Boy, I'll tell you what that laugh down there to the back on that last line to the back by KG was very close as I've seen legal or not it looked like it was in bounds.
So Dan Gable's words were, Are you kidding?
5 to 1 in favor of brands?
That's the first point to two matches that night has been able to score against one of the best.
And he's just taken it to brands and night on his street Great that was he just powered it down and now everybody's head together or he's going to get be fat and try to score the brand is really working in all speed to you know we snap you know it's just incredible We have injury problems and I is complaining about the shoulder.
Here's a look at this.
He's in tight right here, stays in good position, gets the whizzer there, then comes back around, stuffs the head right here now, snaps the head and goes around for the takedown right there.
He hit his head on the mat a little bit there, I think.
And also the shoulder right there, shoulder hurt there from the from the dry.
But Terry Brand snaps.
He goes around, drops the leg, snaps goes around behind the arms, drops the legs, cradles.
You saw him start to cradle up.
He has so many other still working over.
All right here.
Here he comes on again.
Right here.
Now, watch his head right here.
His head hits there on the mat.
And then to do it.
And then he whizzer off the shoulder around turn.
And then when they going out, go and drive him down back to the center again.
Terry Brands has piled up now at nine, the two lead over Dan Knight and he's begun to 25 seconds later we have 25 laps to go in the second period.
Go Knight goes into the down position.
He takes up by seven with riding time, a ton of it, 2 minutes, 38 seconds goes to work on top left hammer Knight has been worn locks hours There's the bar on his arm that knight is nursing a moment ago Go to work period ends 9 to 2 Your choice.
I've done neutral body grind to see Russell.
Sometimes that can be a blessing to get so darn nervous.
Knight gets his choice.
He will start in the down position.
When I was wrestling, my mom always had a great day by herself.
Nobody would get close to her.
Hey, they got elbows inside, everything else.
Come on, Daddy, suck it up.
Well, that's why I think a lot of people are so far apart at wrestling.
It's pretty hard to watch it slowly still at all.
Terry Bradley It's 9 to 2.
Starts in the top position.
He's trying to lock up a title here.
He can do it from anywhere and he will.
He'll try what's ahead in the side.
He has dominated down nine here at 100 on your way.
Oh, well, he's good.
There's a point on the by way of major decision.
You know, he said today that was laying on his belly he has nine and a half Nelson he to the mat.
Oh and he has a lot of time by not working with a minute and 10 seconds left.
Oh, say, oh, that's his 15th ball of the year.
They've been involved and I think they're number one here and a lot of here.
Look at this Underhook right there on the car driving over with the chin.
You have the kid tied right there.
You get the chest and one long shoulders flat for the fall.
And that's it.
5 minutes and 50 seconds, the end of the match, the winner by a fall he was leading at the time.
10 to 2 is Terry Bryan.
And what happened at £134?
Tom Brandes wins by a forfeit.
Iowa State did not weigh in on that.
And it is a forfeit four or six points and Iowa goes up 50 something.
Now we go to 140 to Troy Steiner.
The Hawks ranked fifth against John Rust at score.
Iowa State was born up in Westerville, but he came to Iowa State from Kenai, Alaska, as a junior and then goes spine on that leg right away.
The Hawks rolling and the Cyclones spent nothing, nothing.
Put the brakes on here a little bit, does it can get away into a big, big steamroller.
Well that's what their first four or five are all about, being a steamroller for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
And I'd say there's probably nobody any more on a roll in Troy Steiner right now than take Dr. Steiner.
But he is a definite title contender at £142.
It seems to me also, I think the difference between Troy Steiner last year and this is where guys get to work.
I think he's gained a lot of confidence.
I think he's being more physical on the mat, and I think that's what the coaches are hoping for when he gets people in the under position, he can stick it.
He's working right up front.
He's confident.
He bars the arm and comes right out front before going into his favorite position, which is the leg in.
And he can make it a long night for somebody with this.
John Rust right now, junior at Iowa State, seven and nine this year.
What I've noticed during Steiner lately is he can make it a short night.
It's true.
Well, we'll have an interesting one with Terry Steiner coming up next because we'll see.
For the first time this year and the first time, I can think in a while, if probably ever enough in college.
Steve Hamilton at £150 for Iowa State instead of 158.
He and Terry Jackson are switching against Iowa today.
He's been an all-American twice, eight, and now he's got 150 because he wants more than just to be an all-American.
And he feels that's a good weight for him.
So it'll be interesting to see.
Doug.
Right here we have Troy Steiner again working that leg legs in, working the arm bars and a half Nelsons up there because he's looking to turn and look at that.
He's got seven mark right through here.
That's a to pay for another one or nothing work for Hawkeye Troy Steiner now and look up and look up with it if Jill Steiner is really have to be the pride of North Dakota in wrestling coming out of North Dakota, not known as a big wrestling state to come out and really prove himself.
The Iowa Hawkeyes get tougher for John Rust.
Dad is behind four to nothing and he is flat out.
If you let anybody go, you've got to work up there.
You see each other as dads.
Face it, it's easy for you to say, right?
You know, that's a good point that you make there, right, Doug And that John Rust it if that's what he does, there's such a thing as dominance.
There's such a thing as not to get up and move against somebody that's a lot better than he is, and that shouldn't be stalling, then not tell Top to be going for that ball.
Two more points for Steiner on a tilt six Oh, try Steiner.
His twin brother Terry is next against Steve Hamilton.
Here comes another one.
Go.
And Sean Russell had two.
He couldn't stop that one either.
That's the third air fall out until the first period and take them up in the air right here.
He's got it up.
He's going to load it up right on his hips right here.
He's going down.
He's using his leg, Swiss legs right up there holding Russ dad there for the two day near-fall.
He uses every part of his body right there.
Troy Steiner Feet, arms to the toes.
A lot of technique.
Troy Steiner starts in the under position here against Russ Dad, I guess up Bob said.
He's always said you need to wrestle from the tip of your toes to the top of the head.
And I think Troy Steiner's doing it now.
Lot.
You know, when Steiner stood up, Dad had to go down.
Here.
Is Steiner coming around behind.
All right, head up.
People like that.
Russ, that still has the advantage.
Now that's going to be a stalemate.
That's too much trouble on the knee, I think.
Probably, too.
That's right on 2 minutes and 2 seconds are riding time.
Steiner left back.
Russ Dad's down on the leg, but he wants to keep Steiner in tow here just for the first part of the second period.
Now, again, there's Russ that had him to go low.
Still red still has the advantage right there.
It just looks like it stays.
If you've ever seen that step before.
Dad, here comes Steiner around.
Herschel makes a tandem.
I think rules that a lot out of your head.
Is that the Iowa speed seconds do not have a takedown yet.
But that's not unusual for Iowa's opponent.
In the last three dual meets, we've seen about this weight class.
And opponents have not had a takedown.
They're pretty scary from the bottom up and they're getting scarier at the top.
One one.
Troy Steiner leads here ten oh, with 35 seconds to go.
He's come up right out front, goes right up in front of the head.
Let's go to turn his man from there if he can.
And if he loses Russ dad there because it's worth it.
Because he can take him down again.
Just hit.
This is what he's after.
Oh, Headscissors.
Oh, oh, oh.
He has a through.
But I know if he has, he doesn't get enough time to pin it here.
But he is getting a point near Paul for doing nothing.
Here's a reminder as we look at Jim Gibbons that we're showing you, our traditional college wrestling memory musical montage that will be drawing the three sets of NCAA wrestling tickets.
That's you may have written interviewed for a chance at.
And we'll look at the stats from the first half as well.
This period they start on their feet.
Russ dad wanted to stay up no more of that going underneath trouble back.
He started it tuck under Steiner across tackled at this guy They're very methodical technically sound he comes right out rushed out of here leading 13 to nothing.
This would have the match nothing nothing technical call up a 15 point margin makes it a technical foul with five points for the team.
And after £142, it is Ohio what, 20 and the sidewall zero.
College wrestling will continue on the statewide office.
More Iowa Public television after we pause for station ID.
Oh wow.
Here we are again, a Carrboro Hawkeye Arena.
The last time Iowa State and Iowa met up until it was seven matches of Iowa, then three matches of Iowa State.
The Cyclones would like to get into the little scoring a little earlier here they have Steve Hamilton now down at £150 against Terry Steiner.
I think for some people they are something of a surprise, but it's going to win for a while probably.
Well, I think that it's kind of Steve Hamilton has it in mind to be his rebirth as far as wrestling is concerned.
He was at 158, was having trouble scoring.
Some guys that really were a little bit bigger than him and he wants to win the national title.
We talked about it and I think that he feels at 150 is where he should be.
But as you mentioned, he still hasn't got the spot because Corey Jackson is also a 150 pounder and they'll be a wrestle off later, I'm sure.
But Torrie Jackson will be up at 115.
Let's go.
Well, today I know that Ryan Saylor, who is ranked number one here comes Hamilton against Terry Steiner working in Steiner's right.
Number five.
At this point, Hamilton was number two up at 158, although he had lost to Ray Miller since those rankings came out.
Hey, it's Terry Steiner can establish himself in the feet.
Then Steve Hamilton's in trouble because Gary Steiner, like his brother, he's good on top.
And so it's a real key.
First few minutes here for the Iowa wrestler to see what he can do on his feet.
Well, it's interesting, too, that Steve Hamilton cut weight.
He went down to 150 for the first time that happened.
What kind of effect does that have on you sometimes?
Well, I think sometimes it has some effect.
But I think Steve Hamilton may or may be a 150 pounder.
So if you're going to the weight, you should be it should have no you know, shouldn't have any ill effects.
And I think he looks good at 150, Doug, actually, as far as just looking at him physically, mentally 50 to go in the first period, no score.
Steiner Williams Part of the 20 seconds.
John Bismarck, century high school offense.
STEINER I have a lecture to work the head hard.
Hamilton does, too.
He tussles on the head.
You know, back to your point, the high approach I abide by.
Steiner, I think, cuts it across.
He's got a shot.
There's hip action, Good hip action by Steve Hambleton.
Well, Steiner still more get that move up he's he's in there strong on the high leg right here Steve Hamilton needs to keep the hip doesn't even get in tight do anything bad stuff the head right there.
Yeah going back to your point, if there are some effects that we'll see it in the third period as far as cutting down for the first time and I think that's where we'll see it.
Glad we know that Terry Steiner doesn't have to cut a lot of weight.
So if there's a jacket on, if there's an adjustment, it's in your shape the last minute of the first period.
Now Iowa leaves 22 of the first four matches, one of them a forfeit of £134.
Tom Brown's did not have an opponent in 45.
You're looking to score.
Now look for the score.
But there was a ten at 126 when Jerry Brown nominated Dan Knight and pinned him in 558 shot.
Guys, let's go after the first match between zapped on eight and one over here's an outside single by Hamilton.
See where he goes with it.
Don't get it to as good technicians here working at each other.
But he needs to execute here.
He needs to commit to the move all the way to staying right after today I'm thinking mine, and that's to get that takedown.
And he got out.
Referee Steiner got away and lost right at the end.
That's right.
Given Nick cheer from the Iowa fans as they watch their 250 pounder.
Terry Steiner Watch it.
Hamilton was the darling at waiting time.
First period's going to end.
But I thought when guys have done this homework, Steiner gets his chance.
He'll go down, take a look at that game.
Whether they agreed upon that red box or Hamilton goes on to change our lineup right now.
Work and work and work.
And Steiner gets to his feet right now and takes the lead.
One nothing ever.
One thing I guarantee is Steve Hamilton needs to be able to go all 7 minutes because Terry will That's the one thing I think that's the hot guys right now in those first five weeks is they have the ability to go up 7 minutes and more with the type of style that guys do you want to be more hands on your wrestling?
The Hawkeyes come after both, man.
Work in the head.
You can say, go ahead.
Now there's a warning.
Just knock it out when you're back and straight on.
Second, you work in here right now.
That's got to motivate Steve Hamilton.
He ought to be able to get after him to know that he's got nine or maybe thinking a little bit about that stalling.
Paul Jones Oh, interesting.
There's a side single by Hamilton again.
He got here once before and couldn't keep it to keep him in the center and commit to this all the way to the man.
Don't get it right here.
What Terry Steiner needs to do is keep putting the pressure down.
Look for that with the.
Nope.
And he almost caught him on his back.
That was he came out and actually Steiner did a great job of getting back to his face real fast because just one more second of hesitation and Hamilton would have had it cut.
He could move to do what happened.
That's the first takedown for Iowa State in this league.
Let's see if I could keep him down right here.
He does not have to go underneath in that third period.
And I think that's really important.
But we'll see how that plays out.
I get it real important right here for Steve Hamel.
He doesn't know how to do it.
That's a big Steiner 42 two with 13 seconds to go in the second period.
Lots of things.
Hey, right here.
Here's the takedown.
They go to driving.
We almost got him.
Steiner did a nice job of getting back to his face.
Get to work.
4 seconds.
And again, the period is going to end with no more scores.
And Hamilton will have a choice here.
I think the discussion we're going to get all goes down and he will take it out against Steiner.
Oh, by the way, again, here we go.
I think that's a real interesting choice right here, that on 40 seconds of writing time belong to Hamilton.
Now, that's not enough for a point.
Gives him a little margin of error here.
He went into a roll.
Oh, and he just keeps right on.
Coming up.
Good scramble to look.
And it's two for Hamilton.
I saw a lot of determination there by Hamilton he was putting to get out in his mind.
He had it.
So he really did more to score points there.
Well, he knew he was good.
Steiner has a lot going for him on the lake.
He wanted to establish some respect.
Right here.
Comes up with the combination good, good pressure there and good position.
He's going after the two points and he ends up with it.
Okay, now we start with a minute.
35 to go again.
Hamilton cut way to get to 150. Who scores on a three now after an escape in the 5% three interesting scramble as Steiner comes out here on the double leg.
There's a good position right here.
He can turn into it.
He always got to turn around.
It's a scrambling.
I think he has a minute to go and right there he needs to stay on that leg.
He had to racing for the other leg stuck and that's a stalemate.
I got into the lap like he is going.
As far as the Iowa wrestling is concerned, Terry Steiner needs to do just what he get there.
Get it out in the leg.
Let's get him on.
That was a nice job for Kerry Steiner.
The gun Steve had it for three feet need to break quarter off right now.
346 seconds to go at 155.
Yeah.
Steve Hamilton.
Yes, you're looking right.
He gets up to front 58 and Jeff Jarvis, who has a one point lead over Terry Steiner and Steiner goes in on the double leg blocked by Hamilton.
The aggressive is going to win here right now.
Steiner wants it.
Hamilton needs to keep the offense himself.
This is great.
I don't want 26 seconds to go with Terry Steiner Rank fifth at 150.
He's in on the of the high clock nice high catch 15 seconds.
Watch it and it ends right there.
A tough match.
Hey there was no riding time.
A 4 to 3 victory for Steve Hamilton over a deeply disappointed Terry Steiner.
Steiner gave a great match right there.
He kept the offense on.
He came so close.
I'm really impressed with his offense.
At the end, Steve Hamilton cut to £150 and Iowa State has scored just one decision.
Hamilton over.
Steiner 4 to 3.
And I'm popular a lot of course, here in Kabul, Hawkeye Arena.
That's the end of £150 match.
Kevin I'll be back in just a moment with more coverage we're back at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
It's halftime of the Iowa State.
Iowa dual meet with the score 22 three in favor of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Now, what we're all we've all been waiting for the big drawing for three pairs of NCAA wrestling championships tickets.
Here's Doug Brown.
Well, my friend, if you put in an entry for the NCAA tickets, here's your chance to find out whether you won or not.
And a draw the numbers.
We have something like 2500 entries in this bag.
Here is Amber Schwartz.
Amber, before you before you get your hand in there, tell me where you're from.
I'm from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and I'm a junior here at the university.
She's one of the wrestling cheerleaders in the Iowa team.
And now this is Give me your name and where you're from.
I'm from Cammy Fleming.
I'm from Ferrell, Minnesota.
Okay, Cammy, you get ready.
And Amber, why don't you reach in there and draw the first one?
We're giving away three pairs of tickets for the NCAA wrestling championships to be held here in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Just open that up if it's and get it ready to go.
Now, you can take another one.
The second one, we're picking up three winners, three pairs of tickets now, another one, Amber.
And you can do the the last one and the will read them all off all at the same time where we pay for only the tickets, the expenses are up to you.
Employees and their families of Iowa Public television not eligible will notify the winners by phone as soon as we possibly can, just as soon as possible.
And we hope that this drawing is going to work out just the way we hope it will with planned on the first winner, this is Jeff Weisner, Rural Route two, Box 164 in Fort Madison, Iowa.
Jeff Wise Singer is one of the winners of the NCAA wrestling pairs of tickets.
Now, the second pair here is an Iowa City name, Carl Condon, 1002 Tower Court of Iowa City.
And that is the second pair of tickets for the NCAA championships March 14th.
And here's the last one.
Okay.
From Dubuque.
Mike Emily is 2680.
Mary would drive in Dubuque, Iowa, the winner of the third pair of tickets.
Thank you very much, Amber Schwartz.
Yeah, and thank you, Cami.
Now we go back to Tim Johnson.
We hope we hope you are enjoying Iowa public television's 15th anniversary coverage of college wrestling.
You know, we'll have our 20th anniversary of high school wrestling on Saturday, March 2nd, Live at 6:30 p.m.
It's always a great show.
The big three ring circus there when the best high school wrestlers there it is, Saturday, March 2nd, 630 Live.
And we have the we crowned the top 39 champions 13 in each class a double and triple A.
It's always an exciting time and we always look forward to it.
Doug and I, it's going to be a great one.
The 20th anniversary of the High School wrestling championships.
Look at those stats right there.
Team Scorpion, 22 three.
And all you have to do is look at the total points.
Scored 49 points by the Hawkeyes.
There's only been one takedown and that was by the last match.
Steve Hamilton there at 154, the Iowa State and the nine takedowns for the Hawkeyes, a few near Falls for the Hawkeyes, none for the Iowa State.
It's all indicative of the score.
They're 22 to 3 right there.
And it is Iowa over Iowa State, 20 to 3 In all.
We're talking about that 20th anniversary of the high school tournament.
Well, I was there.
I remember that very well.
We did that tournament the very first one.
So as I was a senior high school.
That's right.
That's right.
I was the only junior high school student ever to broadcast a high school wrestling tournament.
The very first one I looked up to as champ, as an older fellow, there is Torrie Jackson of Iowa State, prowling around the mat and getting ready for his match against Tom Ryan at £158.
He just because that was something that Torrie Jackson and Steve Hamilton and the Iowa State coaching staff decided switched weights tonight with Steve Hamilton.
Hamilton won a very close decision over Terry Steiner 4 to 3 at 150.
Jackson goes up to £158 and pounds will.
By the way, if you want to see, we'll show you as soon as we get them out of the can, put them up on a graphic on our screen.
We'll show you the winners.
Again, the winning entries in that drawing we just had for the three pairs of NCAA wrestling to answer it.
So the second round here we go at 115 top right now ranked one a junior from what I'm taught of York against Torrie Jackson of Iowa State, ranked fourth at 150 and upper weight for the first time in a dual meet up a major consequence.
He's a junior from Lansing, Michigan, 28th when Iowa won the first four matches and then Hamilton beat Steiner four Florida three power couple of out-of-state wrestlers.
Corey Jackson, of course, his brother Kevin Jackson, paved the way to cycling country for him coming out of Michigan.
And it was Dan Gable who was the influence for the girl who had the little locker flow and to the takedown, people like Tom Ryan, not a name that I woke up and knew of really before this year.
And I bet he works out a lot.
But this fellow right here, assistant coach Jim Zaleski, who was a three time national champion for the Hawkeyes, this whole offering is that great?
Two to nothing in favor of Ryan lost only one match this year.
He got out of 34 hits.
Now, there's a terrific records on the Hawkeyes team this year of the start by Tom Ryan's.
Any indication he just may be on his way here to improve his because so many times you can get caught up in not scoring very fast and you get yourself in a right.
Not bad to work.
Not like you get that where it was a very aggressive start for Paul Ryan from the Hawkeyes.
Great Jackson against Ryan Jackson.
He's got a lot of talent.
He's explosive.
He can make some big moves himself, some size.
That's very nice.
Glances at his bench, 26 to see whether he should let Jackson go or not.
It's going to come back to bite him for a while and take it back down again.
I think Dan Gable or Jim Zaleski said ride them for a while.
Carry him.
See if you can work.
And I got 45 seconds of riding time.
Well, go to the one after Jack Oscar night when he was up 22 three Iowa over Iowa State.
Good job.
Come on, Come on.
You're going to come back.
There we go.
We see the Hawkeyes wrestle line control in the head right there.
And that's really important when you're on an opponent's head all the time.
It wears on.
You doesn't allow you to be in your game.
You can use it, make your mark.
But you were shocked again.
This time, go better manage to get to his feet and stay away.
But Ryan is the aggressor.
That's right.
He's keeping the pressure on to keep Kevin Hart, to keep Corey Jackson out of his game right there.
You do need to keep the pressure on because Jackson is very quick.
There's the power he shot Jackson by for the second time.
Let's go and took him down and makes the score.
Four, two, one.
Go, go, go.
That got him.
You know, we've seen enough of the Iowa team this year to to think that they really are an awfully good team.
Why they won Oklahoma State in the biggest competition at the national tournament needs to be seen double leg by Ryan twice JJ AJ Hector six foot two what you just said there Doug You said twice.
That was 3 seconds.
He got it.
It wasn't a bad shot the first time he got back in with a beautifully deep penetrated double right there.
And I think it left him on second after struck Sweet and a 6 to 2 lead for Tom Ryan three takedowns in the first period I've got nothing against Corey Jackson yeah Tom dad Frank Ryan cheering on here was the take down takes him safely to the mat You know they said take it easy and you sure did put him on his knee almost.
Ryan starts the second period underneath that red tape.
Yep, yep, yep, yep.
That's it.
Right up Jackson Immediately seven to get the start.
And here comes Ryan again.
Keeping good position they're staying here.
Pick your shot.
Look for three off of him coming forward right Got on the hook Going to get it to go for a late come right to work.
Seeing that Torrey Jackson and Steve Hamilton reverse positions for the Iowa meet Jackson went up to 158.
Hamilton went to 150 way there out of bounds scope one else score there's Kevin Jackson for all Americans go at LSU before they dropped their program and then came to Iowa State and I was glad he did it.
He's now down among a number of wrestlers on these two teams, veteran wrestlers for the two teams in the international program How did coming one let's all climb to two lead after his fourth take that Ryan will be very very hard by anybody in the age he has this kind of attitude and he puts that kind of offense on the mat every time he steps out of his shot.
The escape makes it 9 to 3.
Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
Red.
He has not what you guys got.
They hadn't been able to make much offense and the official thought that it was enough to just too little to prevent him from falling in for stalling.
That's nine three after the warning, Ryan.
And at the leg switches to the double look This time left 15 seconds in the second period.
Hey, you know what was so nice about that takedown?
As Ryan knew where he wasn't supposed to maneuver to get back into the center to be able to make the movie.
He did.
And he got the two points go to three in favor of the Hawkeyes via real time here against looks very strong against the streak I found little bit down right here he changes direction right He comes off the leg, comes around, throws the arm bar in and here's the two point rule change in direction 911 to 3 Jackson starts underneath That's the way the takedowns have gone.
Steve Hamilton had the only takedown on a single right now in the second period against Terry Steiner at £150 move in which was the difference in that man one third stroke down 11 to 4.
Jackson is out now.
That's the first real really good offensive move of Jackson was made with a high single on the edge of the mat when he got down.
But Ryan is stuffing his head up.
What official Dave Fresh calls as well.
This is important period for Corey Jackson.
Also, because here we go again, guys.
We have an off day dominating, but we have a side that could be right in there for all-American honors.
He's just you know, he's real high up there as far as and we aren't sure what way you'll be ad either, because it doesn't matter.
You know, it's right between Steve Hamilton and Torrie Jackson.
They both have real solid work and high all-American finishes, regardless of what later.
But they probably will wrestle off this week if Hamilton is serious about staying out of 250.
But he did defeat Terry Steiner in his first match.
But here's Hamilton or Jackson advancing the leg ice double easy by Ryan.
Not much there if you're Jackson go right look into how can I do this in the more back points gets it down with the thought he didn't stop him he's Alaska's so this is what you want to do.
I kind of drew it on the board for him before he did it back 13 to 4 in favor of Ryan handed good wrestle off between Jackson and Alana Hamilton room behind that in Brooks Jackson, 13 to 5.
It's still a major today.
Yes.
This is an impressive showing by Tom Ryan because this is a solid wrestler And Corey Jackson's beat some really good people once big matches for Iowa State.
Ryan doing a workman type type job right here on him.
Okay.
You got 10 seconds to go.
Go one line, 2 minutes and 15 seconds of riding time.
Right, Ryan?
Do 13 to 5 lead.
Ryan can get it here Ryan stuff.
These haven't been around forever.
They go, go, go.
15 five.
Ryan's potential is really tremendous.
What riding time?
15 to 36.
A major decision and a happy dad there Mike Ryan and that makes it 24 three in favor of the Hawkeyes over the final 30 seconds when you're out.
What's a happy dad looks like right there, You whistle, you clap.
Even better, boy, huh?
That's tough on the clock right now.
Let's go to 167.
Number three, Mark Rylance.
I was 4 hours 40 tops outside of Iowa.
Thompson His arm had been cleared and some tough people.
He's 25 and seven this year.
The only slam can stay in That's it in the lineup for the to take that back.
Mike Kelly the way that that works 77 is also a senior year right now hustling with who's taking the time to do what is a big hit that can him from anywhere oh three and here he goes driving down a lot of time and Rollins kind of smells it through three and so 5.4 for Ryan.
I'm sure we'll get another look at that and you can see how it happened.
And 35 to nothing is missing right before his neck, right before he bloody nose.
Stop this one.
Thompson does not get injury.
Time for this.
Look at that right here.
He's that nice throw.
He's able to double over hook, get his hips in there and make the pass.
He knows what He did it with both his hips.
He was able to get his hips underneath.
Now it's looking awful tight, looking good.
But Thompson's able to squeeze through here and get his shoulders up off the mat, just barely right here.
Boy, it's close.
And it does get.
Is that why Thompson did a good job of avoiding the pain that time?
The first half of this beat went this way.
If you just join us, pretty tough match at 118.
Tougher than last time.
Sapp would be naked, though, by coming on the takedowns late eight three and Terry Brandes pinned fourth, ranked down by 550 at 126.
Tom Brandes had a four foot no Iowa State wrestler at 140 to Troy.
So John Rust out on a on a text call about losing a point.
Then at 150 Steve Hamilton came down to 150 and 43.
A tough controversial match picking up 158 Tom Ryan, a major over Torrie Jackson the one 5826 to 5 and here we are at 167 Iowa State's manage to get 13 points out of their individual so far all together against 66 for Iowa and Bobby Thompson has got enough of a bloody nose here that he is not trying to decorate it decorated jacket off the 50 and see a championship March 14th.
You can see the Hawkeyes.
Okay.
We're going to give you a another look, this one, and I'm sure this is a fun look for anybody who won.
Those are the NCAA ticket winners in the drawing we had at halftime with Jeff Wise, winner of Fort Madison, Carl Konrad of Iowa City, and Mike Molly as a tribute.
Congratulations, Will.
I wonder if they felt lucky and they're not going to purchase any now or wonder if we're going to see him out there with two in the air, two tickets in the air outside selling every session.
The tickets.
They've already don't know, but they're going to have a lot of fun because the NCAA championship will be right here in Iowa City March 14th through 16th on the left, green on Bobby Thompson.
Back in the military, you don't get injury time, time out for a bloody nose because as we've often said, you don't it's pretty hard to fake blood, which is what the rule tries to prevent working on right now because I think Thompson's a real solid wrestler and wrestles a lot of big people.
Tough railing, the aggressor right now.
And if he can stay aggressive, it's going to go a long way in Iowa.
Chances to win a national championship.
Write down what I mean.
Stay.
I mean all 7 minutes.
And that's a key to railing.
That's Tim Johnson I just heard.
I'm Doc Brown.
We're on Iowa public television's 15th anniversary season of college wrestling coverage for today at Carver Hawkeye Arena For our final dual meet of the season, the rematch between the Great and the Hawkeyes.
And it's been Iowa so far 24 to 3 coming into this race.
Seven there's the first break for Bobby Thompson, down five one today.
What one really, really has Paul I've got a caller.
I think he's one of the more talented wrestlers on the team, if not the most talented he can throw from anywhere.
He can pin from anywhere.
He's got to look at that snap of the head step spun around and a 7 to 1 scramble.
He stays open.
Know maybe nobody in the country can stay with him.
And it has so much of an arsenal.
Bring him in.
Well, I'll tell you.
Go.
He did.
You looked at Iowa only here in Carver Hawkeye this year would wonder who in the world had any chance of beating him.
Look at this.
A little neat tap that didn't do much.
But he spun around to the other side for the two points.
Sets it up Well, no.
Let's go to Thompson.
We'll go back to the down position.
We have 15 seconds to go.
First period.
Obviously, it kind of came at the end of the match with a a bandage over his eye.
And now he has a very, you know, still very there's the great Thompson seven two, still very well.
We drove the blood again and he's really he really does have us quite a bloody nose here and time is called again That's Dan Gable who has been the Well he was pretty tickled I think for most of last championship this year.
And things came out pretty well this year.
There's a sports spectacular coming up there on March and we've been covering it for 20 years.
It's the high school wrestling that Tim Johnson, Dean Borg, Dick try to support the whole thing, the reaction, the opening ceremonies awards, our 20th anniversary high school wrestling on Iowa public Television Saturday beginning at 630.
Don't miss it if you can.
Well, any high school wrestling fan or any wrestling fan, period, shouldn't miss that spectacle.
30 seconds to go in the first period.
It's been slow evolving here so far because we're going to work on Thompson's nose bleed.
And so we've had to stop several times, Mark Rylance, and concentrate on the natural ball.
The one thing about Thompson is he's a gamer.
He'll stay in there, he'll fight you.
There's a difference in talent right here, Doug, between Mark Rylance and Bobby Thompson.
But you know, there's a lot of heart in Bobby Thompson.
He's a senior.
And you can bet that match he's wrestling right now.
He's saying, Hey, this probably the last match, one of the last matches our wrestling.
He gets in there, he goes after it and goes.
That had a lot to do with him getting off his back.
Yeah, I think so.
7 to 2 is the score here.
At the end of the first round, Rylan gets his choice and takes the position seven to kill.
Right on.
But if you think you're good, it's a position of advantage because you get the point for escaping.
Roll by.
Hey, he's out to eight to to escape a six point lead for the hawk.
Get to work get our go efficient at 177.
We don't know who will wrestle it might be Matt Johnson it might be Mike Kelly for Iowa State against Barcelos big working outside.
I'm guessing it's going to be good.
Johnson Because I don't know how Sean Kelly's warming up to his 8 to 2 here at 167 in favor of Weiland Hawkeye and Black.
KARL Go, Let's go.
So you saw Iowa beat Oklahoma State in a devastating matter last weekend.
Iowa State, Matt Russell, Cowboys.
Great.
You're water great great thought Hey, take place a week from today.
Well that's always tough to wrestle Gallagher Hall now Gallagher I honor not only the great wrestling coach but the great basketball coach of Oklahoma.
That's a tough place to wrestle an Iowa State lefty ready to go.
There's a warning there and I think it was a good fight.
Let's go there.
Go.
I believe it was against Riley.
Let's go.
Oh, Rylan has slowed his pace out here in the second period.
And get in.
Get is leading 8 to 2 with Bobby.
Didn't want to get in lock up upper body.
There we go.
All right.
That's the Iowa State bench.
Joe begins in the center of the gym.
His brother, the head coach on the right, and Kevin Jackson on the left, right here.
This is where Mark needs to push himself.
He needs to really just say, I've got to go here and I've got to be able to score here.
This is where this is the road to the national championship.
I have to be able to score at the end of a second period, really put it on in the third period.
It's important right now for Ireland to show why they began the match with a five point move.
So sometimes that makes you lazy afterwards and that's it.
You know.
Mark Ryan, there's no need for him there in that case because he can hit it any time and about right now, three points for the national pop physical shape going into the second period with an 8 to 2 lead for Ireland, he had the only 120 to 7 Jersey attendance today, 11,109 fans to cover Hawkeye Arena to watch Iowa at Iowa State lockup head to head to seal three day and Iowa leads 24 to 3 in one hour.
All but the £150 match so far.
Steve Hamilton, Terry Steiner there for three rapid walk out.
Hit me now.
Great injury time out again for Thompson and I think it was a knee Yeah he's had a he had a knee rebuild you know we've mentioned that earlier in the year and that's why that's the one that he had to work back all year at the time.
He's ready to go, come down Mark Rylance, junior high school flop so great on coming back after a rebuilt knee also tells you something about Bobby Thompson.
I go to Ames, Iowa, a local product statement talking about the state meet, which will broadcast in two weeks.
Bobby Thompson was a state champion undefeated senior year, round, one to state by 8 to 3.
Now, Thompson has various caves going in and out again.
Good, crazy, easy going here.
We come back to the center again doing stupid.
Got it.
Referee Dave Parrish, Colorado Springs.
Ryan had a big first period.
They have been one one ever since Drew with him back to the center with a minute to go in the hook, gets out the door.
Walker, Lay back, lay back him up.
Go get Thompson has managed to block Raylan out of there pretty well ever since the first period.
Not much going on.
Now.
Go.
Oh, man.
I make you wonder what I'm sure going through Thompson The coaches might wonder what happened with that big move.
Hadn't happened early.
I tend to think Rylan always has that big move somewhere in a Mad Max Route 823 island with 35 seconds to go.
Great.
Gave up a great line on red.
There's a lot of hurt.
Sometimes you got to be back in the corner to get going there, but that's a pretty good whizzer hit.
BLOCK by rail out by Thompson holding the island down to take him down right at the very edge.
Okay, first take since about the middle of the second pair of first period, 10 to 4 jump is one point away from a major decision.
Mark Rylance with writing time make him 11 for six 6 seconds to go.
Tanner for not like the basketball team found out last night.
Anything can happen in 6 seconds.
No, you go.
Oh, boy.
I'll tell you, you're here back.
Yeah, You know what you're talking about.
Two.
Did he give him the reverse?
Yes, he gave the reverse, but he didn't.
Getting any back from that side of the river.
And so the reverse made up 10 to 16 right in time in an 11 six.
You're right.
You get into a situation like that, you don't lose your cards right now.
You've got to take it all the way to the buzzer.
Anybody that lacks up the other guy making and they want it more.
Good point right there.
He had enough of a cushion right there for that.
That could change the of the Big Ten in the national number 27 to 3, Rylan takes his Iowa Hawkeyes up over Iowa State by 24 not one on 77.
And Mike Kelly comes out to wrestle for Iowa State a senior from Bret.
He has a brother on the Iowa team against Barb tells me hey and junior from webster city.
Matt johnson will not wrestle at 177 tonight.
He's had a little bit of an ankle problem.
That may be part of the reason that he was held out and Johnson is ranked fourth.
Charles big is unranked at the moment.
That may have been another reason why.
Thank you.
Thank Wausau.
They don't want to take any chances before the big eight tournament.
We keep talking about the NCAA ways, but we also have to remind ourselves and our viewers that the Big Eight and the Big Ten's are between the Nationals and these teams.
They have to qualify.
They have to finish really high working guys.
Let's set up the last three weights for Iowa, because it's your impression that's been mined that these upper weights were damn.
Gable has been putting a lot of his start in the last few weeks.
He figures that he can get these guys on the track all the way to their top of their ability.
And then Iowa will be tough to beat.
Try almost all of this time on those last three.
And any time Dan Gable puts that much time into a weight class or two, they're going to improve.
And he knew he found out where he needed to spend his time, get to one or two shots in Bartlesville.
Well, certainly, certainly in Pfizer.
Also, as he starts playing, let's go again last week from Arizona State Charles big against Mike Kelly now at £177.
Mike Kelly, a senior from Drift Fine Wrestling farm Day and getting getting like anyone Mike Kelly got his he got a big win last week wrestling at 177 under a up against Oklahoma.
He was filling in for Matt Johnson and he got a pin that make it work fine Get him off your head got to go and really rolling high right now good or bad circa Bart Charles got 177 for Iowa right he was he was rated highly earlier this year go run into a slump in mid-season he's not rated now I don't believe it.
Well he is out there he's he's coming on steady through the nation last year.
He's very talented.
But he just needs to get himself going both mentally and physically.
And I think he's on his way.
All right.
Now, how about out?
Look, Red, Let's go.
Red, white and yellow.
Red.
You need some more offense.
You got a warning.
Let's go back to the center.
They look great.
Great job.
Everything exactly fake.
They make it go back.
Warning against Kelly.
What you got to play with him is the first time pass over He gets right there you call it no points second man it is here's Charles up and he is quickly back three started out as a double outside single and is able to catch Mike lay on his back three a big 5.0 Kelly Jokic did a nice job of keeping that Kelly on his back because he had to really tighten up there right in a split second to keep him there.
So it's a nice five point move, not necessarily an automatic five point move but he's here and in the first period and Charles Vick here's how he did it right here now he dumps him down.
Now watch right here.
He's able to pull inside.
You can't see it well from this angle.
But Kelly, really looked like he would have been able to get out of that, to come up with just two against him in 12 weeks.
See how he has that arm tight right there.
That was the key.
And so just like that, it's five to nothing in favor of Charles Vick.
Through the first 3 minutes, Kelly had his choice, took the down position to try to score.
But Charles Vick's putting a lot of weight on him right.
And that's true what Coach Briggs was talking about the other night when he was our guest commentator.
You can make yourself heavier than you really are.
And that's what you're doing right now because of that hip action.
He's making himself heavy.
And that really wears on you when you're on the bottom.
And three three loss control got one read one day of fresh says it's even more to say he gave the escape to Kelly on that possession.
Let's look at it.
He's not on top and he's got his body off him right here in the roll by.
Kelly was able to bring him around.
But did Charles ever lose control?
That's the question.
The referee finished as he did there, up one point for Kelly.
Again, attack I think 510 working at work and quickly That's it.
Back up.
Move him now.
A stroke going out of bounds.
We have less than a minute to go in the second period of re Iowa public television, 15th anniversary season was last week wasn't it.
We started that.
It seems like I was just sit here going, is this our last one or just work eight or nine O And it's been an incredible year already and a short one and we'll find out who the stars of tomorrow are when we cover the Iowa High School.
Meet.
Cute.
There you go.
Attack on two weeks from today face two weeks from yesterday to work in what can we draw on the out of bounds line five to watch all of Iowa for the final has taken the lead over Mike Kelly wrestling at 177 tonight hanging out for Iowa state at 190 to be Travis Fischer against Dan troop troop is rated 11th.
He beat Pfizer by one point.
They're both called call for storming this time and that's a penalty for Joe That's a penalty point for Kelly for for Charles skipping a line for him because Kelly had been called in for Boswell.
Go got 27 to 3.
Now.
Iowa over Iowa State going down eight down.
But started to say about Dan Troop had the success against Pfizer analyze the game and help come on in.
But Pfizer had a big weekend last week and he certainly did time the number two man from Oklahoma State and defeating the number one by elimination from Arizona State.
Now, let's watch.
We're going to get it.
Watch.
Kelly, keep the leg in here and Charles might try to come out.
So Red Kelly tried Celtic came out.
Get to work.
Go, go.
Charles Vick started the third period down now leads 8 to 1 by down I mean in the other position what about back what bit of scope Kelly made an unsuccessful switch pushing way for him down the hip go great you're right there's a warning there's a point against Charleston for Kelly you heard de first say here here's a reversal right here.
Chelsea is able to get the whizzer in, then stop the head and come around for the two points.
You also heard Chris like were saying, going to say you're writing.
And that's not the point in wrestling is to ride it's dependent.
And there's that's the decision the referee makes whether or not you're writing Mark and going for that ball.
Well now there a more in the other way Kelly was in a position to get out and he move and that fresh pen on him.
Now that's the second penalty point against Kelly and that's time.
It's 2.9 to 2 now in favor of Chelsea get door to door.
Chelsea has the single leg.
Nice lip balm for the 2.12.
I see a determined chill here, continuing to show his strength with only 38 seconds with an 11 to 4 lead hard fought that shellfish but no heart go over 30 seconds.
Charles Big has riding time is a major decision.
If the score doesn't change in the next 25 seconds to go by.
But we need shots, guys.
Right.
This is real important for both teams right here.
Just from an individual standpoint, you don't want the Iowa State doesn't want to give up that extra point.
This from a pride standpoint, go tell Greg needs to get that.
No, he doesn't.
He's got it.
He's got it.
He doesn't need it.
But then Gable said, I want you to get takedown.
I got it and he drove it.
Oh, he put you Kelly.
Oh, that doesn't have time to do 0.0.
But when the writing time I have a key point here and makes it 18 before Hold on him.
Well, I'm not sure.
I don't know how it makes an 18 four.
It was 11.
That's more than I have heard of a 7.26 34 or whatever it is to make your decision.
We'll figure it out.
College wrestling will continue on your state line, often sports Iowa Public Television.
After we pause for station ID and 100 miles, the next, the death of junior Travis.
Right now we go to 190 post Iowa against Iowa State Travis Fischer, who drilled eight home fans in Carver Hawk last week with a draw against the number two ranked Nati powder and a win against number one in two exciting matches.
Dan Troop beat Pfizer at Hilton is ranked 11 as a freshman from Kalispell, Montana.
Troop is going to be a good 290 pounder.
He's had a successful year for our freshman campaign.
He's big and physical, but he's young.
Pfizer getting out of college.
Oh, you may never know.
America, never a state champion.
Like we said, he turned on last Monday and he has a lot of potential.
Trump had a nice low single here.
Come on.
Come on.
Yeah, but whether he can turn it into points is another matter.
Now, see how he has the other leg and a high, high position right on the edge.
Oh, boy.
You finally need to pull him in, is what he needs to do.
Know where he's at, pulling in and then execute.
Don't execute it on the edge, putting legs lost and given given.
That's what he was saying.
You if you have that opportunity, drag him into the middle and then execute the shot for a minute and a few seconds into the £190 man away, never go a game circle break free begins at youth that we're talking about inexperience sometimes not not you know having that Matt savvy and that'll come with experience I've never found anything that can replace experience yet get to work get work talent sometimes I'll do it well not when it really comes down to the if they're even if they're even if, you know, the experience is something that has to happen over a long period of time, go get rid of it and you got your head.
Let's go.
Great, great.
You got your head back.
Warning against Pfizer for blocking off with a head shot.
Stay fresh.
Colorado Springs, Colorado, is the referee right there.
I tried to use it.
Hit it.
I go it.
Drop by double underhook there from wrestle tough matches in his encounters with the two top ranked people last week and then came out at the end where guys go to draw one, win the other.
He can't go back to the center again.
You can see that video shot.
Dan Gable doesn't leave.
He's not subtle about it.
He lets you know that he wants his man to go out there.
Go, go, go get Adam.
Neither of these people, as you notice, are on the head.
That one of the drinks paralyzed your heads down.
You're back right there to make the shot.
I ended up on the edge of the mat, got hit for stalling.
Referee Dave Frisch says that's one tweet for Iowa State.
And see, this is where you got to be in the kind of shape to know where you're at root needs to continue to make those shots.
And you need to put Pfizer up against the ropes.
And on the other hand, I need to do what he was doing last week.
He's got a lot of potential and he's they open up I now Pfizer, he gets his choice, wants to go down like it's going to look red take hip hop or hip hop.
And it says, hey, Pfizer got out quick.
Hurry one, one bridge.
You know, Pfizer needs to drop his level and make the attack.
Last week we saw that he stuck there.
He needs to just get on there and penetrate, dropping his level and then and then make that shot.
And he needs to commit himself.
Look at that.
Pfizer with the Underhook.
He has the inside position here.
Now, do that now.
Go, go shot.
Now, I did group got it back.
Learned through your plan group four go went back to the center.
Never stop.
They got snap and go one No one here Troop got a point Let's go find that was hit with a stalling call in the first period after earlier warning and Pfizer escaped to start the second period.
Here you go right here.
Pfizer doesn't make a shot right now, and especially if Trump is able to push him up against the edge, Pfizer's going to get called again going in there.
There was a little move by Pfizer and that luck kept the wolf in the door.
I think, guys, you got to get to it.
Both men got to shoot.
Let's go take off taking a shot.
Yeah.
One, two.
What are you doing here?
Let's go.
This is where truth needs to make the referee commit himself, for one, because he's got him thinking that way right there.
Another shot at the edge.
What do you want?
Yeah, there it is.
I don't want to get a penalty.
I think so.
We'll see.
And the thing is, Pfizer's kid doesn't have to be in this position.
All he needs to do is produce his own offense, and he's not who we've been watching him go, Oh, get your elbows in it, and then go stand up and we have 15 seconds to go.
In the second period of £190, an athlete that has seen the Hawkeyes side 31 of the three.
And here at 192 to 1, when you go in favor of two, both penalty points.
So group will get the start his choice here one down.
Let's get the feeling that Reiss Alger must wrestle Kaiser because he's out there with that horn line.
Yeah, that happens.
You see the different wrestlers that wrestle a room with these muscles on the seat next to that table when they get up because they know they know what these wrestlers thinking.
They're part of their side right there.
All right.
Pfizer, it's Hong Kong down against Drew, who is a freshman from the high country Kalispell, Montana, gets it hurt Group is out and takes a two point lead.
Now, the third period last week was Pfizer's period, and he needs a big change here against Dan Troop.
Hey, going with the score three, two, one favor of the cyclones here in this man.
It's good struggle for the inside position but now five working hard to get out of our way.
No, no, no, no You've been warned.
Okay, You're backing out.
I thought that the rematch was supposed to go on.
Really?
Stop the match.
I mean, I don't know.
I think he said he just warned this guy.
No, but as far as it was close to being a takedown for true.
And they called it out of bounds, so it wasn't good in there.
So way 3 to 1 score here, it's anybody's match.
The troop of fire two with a minute left.
You get the feeling it doesn't matter whether you're number one, ranked number 11, ranked, whatever fight is going to be in there and have good matches with whoever it is.
Iowa State French qualifier, quote, to hit one, they should hit one because otherwise you'll get called in.
Going back to the starter, we have less than 30 seconds to go.
So Travis Fischer from Marengo.
NORRIE But it was last last week right here.
Get a nice duck on the right here.
And that's one for right now.
Here's Trump with the inside position.
Again, 16 seconds to go.
Wow.
Now Pfizer can't get the setup.
Right foot manages to stay inside after a day.
Official let him it about Cauley Stein.
You can go right to the end of the match here and he did 3 to 1 here Oh damn Drew for the second time this year he wins at £190 against Iowa satisfied Fleck And like I said, he's a good freshman dog, so he's going to get better with his shirt Now.
31 this good.
And now we go to Heavyweight Marciano's Corner from Iowa will wrestle Jamie Cutler.
Todd Kenney also weighed about Jamie Cutler was 11 and four and has done quite well here.
We're from West Des Moines, Iowa.
John Osterberg locks up right away with a bear hug across the back.
And he couldn't put his back.
No.
Listen to the crowd at a bar.
Oh, another 5.000 we talked about right here, Cutler said.
Well, do I go with it?
He went with that and he flew over Jordan.
Where was did a nice job of getting the points on the edge of the map before they went out of bounds.
Great.
Has had eight here for over here.
Okay.
It's got to be so far still 110 that was at £126 were defending national champion Terry Branstad pinned last year's third place man Dan Knight and 5 minutes and 50 seconds, E.J.
Ostergaard looks like the big goal of last year.
I mean, yeah, he went against Jamie Cutler.
He's a head fighter.
Nothing.
And now he can go.
No.
Nearly had Cutler in a nearfall position again one go down by two go do it again Go get this guy.
What Austin Dorp on top against Cutler We had Todd Kinney also weighed in for the sake of our guys Let's go He's ranked seventh.
He did not wrestle right there.
What?
Oh, whole thing.
When you get your half to Iowa.
Come on.
My son won seven one at the opening meet, but Hilton then lost the last three big one look back to all but one so far.
And also north leading five to nothing over Cutler with three risk fight one more time like this.
Let them go.
Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
This is the type of open door Y that they want to see.
Austin Dark, dude.
Aggressive, solid, but not overly aggressive.
The way he makes mistakes on the side can get up In the 15th anniversary of college wrestling.
Eight seasons ago, it's heavyweight between Iowa and Iowa State and Tarver.
Both Iowa City, John Austin, rough leads the Cyclones.
Jay Cutler fires back and a big move in the first round and in the last 30 of the first period.
What is that?
What's the legend room?
How many times do you see that move by a heavy job?
Cutler is not back by FDA.
3 seconds to go.
Both are getting chest to chest.
He looks like battle it out.
Oh, 2 minutes to 2 minutes and 53 seconds.
Right here.
Yeah, Iowa, 30 seconds.
Iowa State six after the door makes Hawkeyes that final pass like Cutler had a heavyweight appearance and 53 seconds early match between the cyclones on the Hawkeyes West with the first win over the Hawkeyes here in California.
Tell me that our 10th anniversary college Resurrection 46 days.
Thank you.
Big crowd, 11,109, I think was the total here at Carver on a nice Sunday afternoon, late Sunday afternoon between these two teams.
Yes.
And now they get ready for the Nationals, although Iowa State now has a big dual meet.
Well, I was with Oklahoma State.
You have the car that won't be a go on.
And then they all get together with their colleagues in the big conference, make the game.
I still think there's a lot to prove.
Iowa State still one of the best teams in the nation.
And I think what we see is that there's a really a best dual meet team in the nation.
That's Iowa Hawkeyes.
But when it comes to the NCAA, I won Iowa State.
Both have their conference tournaments ahead of them.
That's big.
And things happen, as you know, when in the middle of dominating seasons.
When we said we talked about it last week, Oklahoma State got driven of this place a couple of years ago and then went on to win the national tournament.
The tournaments are different in order to get some other people involved, other people.
And it comes down to how many people can you get in there scoring, you know, and it comes down to a numbers game into the final.
Well, there was one of the Iowa State winners that was Dan True.
We want to say some thank you.
By the way, the people, for helping us out throughout the season.

Well, T.J., we had a good season again and we saw, at least in the dual meet season one dominant team.
Oh, I really believe the Hawkeyes had one of the best seasons they've ever had.
When you when you talk about up and down the lineup.
And it should be pretty exciting, though, for both teams, Iowa State, Iowa and northern Iowa when they head into the NCAA.
If you've been around the sport very long, you know that strange things happen in tournaments that you don't think you're going to see on the basis of a dual meet season.
Oklahoma State is going to be back.
There's no doubt about that.
They're going be tough.
We hope you enjoyed our season 15th anniversary.
I'll be looking for you, T.J., two weeks from today when we watch the high schools.
And that's on Saturday, March 2nd for Iowa.
Television's 20th anniversary coverage of the wrestling championships will be on the air at 630.
Live from Des Moines.
There'll be three teams, 39 individual champions Saturday, the second at 630.
Pop, you'll watch if you're not there.
Now, stay tuned for our Sunday lineup next, including Nature Masterpiece Theater, followed by May to December then three up and two down.
That sounds like a recipe, too.
And there you are.
That's next on.
And then, are you being served next on Iowa Public Television for Tim Johnson, I'm Doc Brown.
