Steve Smith taps into a springtime tradition in Central Michigan.

Making maple syrup is a rite of spring and a Michigan tradition. Turning sap in syrup dates back thousands of years. It was an essential source of food for the Native Americans in the area, as well as a tradition that is kept alive by the tribes to this very day. In the town of Shepherd, community members are hard at work harvesting sap from neighborhood maple trees.
