The Story of the Moonlight

Clip: Special | 4m 30s | Video has closed captioning.

In 1874, Milwaukee’s Wolf and Davidson shipyard built the three-masted schooner Moonlight. Known throughout the lakes for its speed and beauty, the Moonlight’s race with the schooner Porter was immortalized in a song. The ship’s wreckage reveals that it was rebuilt as a schooner barge — a fate common to many large sailing ships after the “age of sail” had passed.
